4 years ago, my family celebrated Juneteenth for the 1st time!!! We were so cute in our Bantu knots! 🥰 Seems like a lifetime ago. Look how little Shia was! 😩 She was gettin’ it then; and can now dance me under the table at 5 years old. (Not very hard, though. 🤪) And LJ has just been killin all his little life. Hope everyone has been enjoying the holiday! And shoutout to the woman in the gym who wished me a Happy Juneteenth this morning! 😁 (I almost said you too. 🤣)

Today my Sweet Girl was laid to rest. I’m so grateful for technology that allowed me to not only watch from CA, but also to send a video for the service. I learned so much more about Shy and what she meant to all who loved her. As a devoted Shay Babe, she would write me the sweetest messages and that’s how she got the nickname, My Sweet Girl. I know you’re resting in the Lord now, my Angel. You won your race. And you did it with grace. Sending love and comfort to her family and loved ones. 💛🕊️

There’s a YouTube video floating around calling out female worship leaders, praise dancers, pastors and recording artists who they believe dress inappropriately in the church. And listen…I would totally understand if I was wearing this leading praise and worship. But I was minding my own business, in my own home, doing a post singing My Funny Valentine for y’all on Valentine’s Day. Lol! 😆 This doesn’t bother me one bit. I been in the church all my life. I know where the skeletons are buried—including some of my own. Trust. And I promise you, there’s more pressing matters to be concerned about. 🫣

There is not one human on earth, I don’t care how spiritual you think or they think they are, that can elevate you to heaven or condemn you to hell. No. Not. One.

For the studio nerds, I recorded the whole album on a M269 Neumann mic. The preamp was a Telefunken V76M, using Fairchild 660 as a compressor. Just a couple of hundred thousand dollars worth of gear. No big deal. 🤯
Here’s a little peek into my process. I will record a vocal line a few times and then decide which parts I like best. I’m very autonomous—and as you can see, I know immediately when it’s not right. Sometimes we’ll take just a word or even a breath to create the perfect take. But what’s ALWAYS a MUST for me is that it’s a phrase that I can sing naturally live over and over again. It’s gotta sound like the record. And in my best Prince voice, my mic is on. 🎤😎
