JIAN HONG GRADUATION AKA WE ARE FAMILY I couldn't be more proud of Jian Hong who just graduated from college. She is a superlative student – insatiably curious, incredibly hard-working, incredibly disciplined. and more importantly, she is a good ass human who now wants to launch a career in public service. The most beautiful thing about the whole weekend, other than having the Chang/Shi family reunited, was witnessing how the family we chose showed up for us. I am particularly grateful to my mentor Michael Ostin, who extended his generosity beyond what he has already done for decades, which is unimaginable. Folx took planes, trains, and electric automobiles to show love to my daughter. Bethann Hardison taught me that “family is a verb.“ And I’ve never seen it in such robust action. IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN I couldn't be more proud to work alongside my dear friend @joeybadass on his most recent journey in social impact. He created this program August 10 and in less than 9 months he stood at podium at Columbia Teacher's College before 200 members of the community he built. @joeybadass I don’t have a degree let alone a high school diploma but here I am at IVY LEAGUE @columbia university creating space for US. Held my first annual @impactmentorship summit this past Friday and it was monumental, you just had to be there. We created a space for men of color to feel safe learning, being vulnerable, asking questions and even vocalizing their dreams and goals. Mentorship is important for the community because it allows us the opportunity to gain access and exposure to information and resources that would otherwise be unavailable to us. My dream with @impactmentorship is to look back 10, 20, 30 years from now and be able to recognize future leaders of tomorrow as beneficiaries of this program. Big up to all the panelists who came out to speak for the people and all the volunteers who offered their services free of charge. Shoutout to the New York Department of Youth and Community Development, NYC Mayor’s office of Media and Entertainment and the @gordoninstitute at @teacherscollege for helping us make this all possible. Special shoutout to my dear friend and mentor @sophchangnyc I couldn’t have done this without you! Stay tuned for next year we gonna make it bigger and better.
