APPRECIATION | Our neighbourhood is a gem. The Esplanade has something truly special, and Esplanadians (those who live, work, study, play, or pass by the community) enjoy every bit of it!   Today, May 22nd, 2024, marks the 50th anniversary of the day when The Esplanade project became public in 1974, and the City announced expropriation of the land, the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.   While The Esplanade was first all water (Lake Ontario came all the way up to Front St), then reclaimed land, it became railroad tracks and an industrial zone not desirable for living.    However, in the 1970s, under the leadership of former City of Toronto Mayor David Crombie, The Esplanade neighbourhood was purposefully developed with a pioneering vision of urban planning centered around people from socially and economically diverse backgrounds. Our community’s development embraced cultural, multigenerational, and socio-economic differences while prioritizing universal design for accessibility. The Esplanade is Jamii’s home.    Let’s celebrate our home on this special day! What do you like the most about our neighbourhood?

It is no secret that the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood is much loved by those of us living here and the thousands who visit each week. What is less known are some of unique buildings and courtyards dotted throughout the neighbourhood. In this post we direct the spotlight on beautiful Berkeley Castle - the local business and events property that served as the location for this year’s annual WAYO Children’s Festival produced by @jamiiesplanade
