When I was 11, my dad had an aneurysm, causing him to be in a coma and on life support which lasted about a month. During this time, our family got together and debated whether or not to “pull the plug”. As an 11 year old, you can imagine this being an intense memory for me. This core memory was the seed for The Vote. In The Vote, I wanted to unpack this memory while exploring multicultural and opposing view points in family dynamics. My hope is for viewers to see how grief can take many different forms and to have empathy for one another, despite how different we may see things.
As I start to share this film with audiences, I’m reminded of my dad and my grief which never really goes away, no matter how much time has passed. He was 41 when he died, and my hope is that he’s proud of me for the woman I’ve become and for following my dreams.
Making this film was truly a magical and cathartic experience. Many cast and crew members shared similar stories of their loved ones. Collectively we poured our love and grief into this film to honor them. Thank you @latinofilminstitute_ for this wonderful opportunity and for the resources it took to bring this film to life. ✨See you Saturday @ 4pm at @laliff_ ✨
I don’t have many pics of me and my dad but here are some pics of my family at the Grand Canyon 💕
“Ride or Die” culture is prevalent in small towns and Chicano families and, in The Middle, we wanted to test the boundaries of that. Do we put aside our own values if it means protecting the ones we love? At what point do we draw the line?
