Crawford Deck rebuild is well underway. This massive, second-story deck was beautifully built in 1984 by the previous homeowner Mike Lannon and his father-in-law. Amazingly, this sun-beaten, wind-blasted, 11-foot high deck lasted for almost 40 years. It could’ve lasted another 10 years with some new decking, stair treads, taller railings, and some fixes to the framing. Parts of the deck and stairwell had become un-level due to the footings shifting during freeze-thaw cycles.
Ultimately we decided it was more cost-efficient over time to rebuild entirely, since I’m still planning to own the building in ten years. Plus, now we can make the underside waterproof, which adds an enormous dry storage area/garage. We also are making the deck smaller so we can add another structure off the back.
