Today, I watched The Golden Madonna, 1949. This British-Italian drama stars Phyllis Calvert, Michael Rennie and Tullio Carminati. Filmed in England and on location in Capri, Italy, this was considered a lost film and was on the BFI 75 Most Wanted list, until a copy was loaned to the British Film Institute by Cohen Media.
Most of the reviews for this film are below average: a reasonable plot that slows down near the middle, etc. etc. One review I read on Letterboxd said: "a truly forgettable 40s Anglo Italian melodrama".
HOWEVER, I, personally, really enjoyed this film. I can completely understand why some people might think the plot sags slightly near the middle, but I feel that the acting and the absolutely stunning location of the film make up for that. Calvert and Rennie have a truly wonderful on screen chemistry and I also love Michael's role in this film. His light-hearted portrayal of his character had me grinning like an absolute idiot the whole time!
So, overall, I really enjoyed The Golden Madonna. It's one of my favourite films of Michael's. 😊❤️
