Today is International Widows Day designated by the United Nations
@unitednations
June 18, 2024, marked 9 years since I became a suicide widow. In 2015 my husband died by suicide in Israel. I’ve turned this painful experience into a passion because no woman should live with shame and guilt, nor lose her livelihood, social status, be disinherited, and stigmatized because her husband died.
I continued living and married again. My husband (who was also a widow when we met) and I travel, meeting with leaders, collaborating with organizations, participating in community events, speaking at international conferences, engaging with media, and mentoring underserved widows, especially those whose husbands died by suicide.
Here’s a glimpse of our impact to date. I am committed to continuing to enhance these relationships to advance our advocacy.
I am also thankful for the widowhood community; living this experience with others who understand is vital. For those who don’t understand, it’s important to reach out and listen to a widow you know, instead of trying to have all the answers.
FACTS
70% of married women will be widowed. Whether educated, beautiful, accomplished, famous, or wealthy, 2400 women husband’s die every day in the United States. Many of them still responsible for young children. No matter the social status they all experience the same stigmas (legal, social and even financial).
