Grant Recipient Spotlight: Colorado Fourteeners Initiative @colorado14ersinitiative
“Funding from the Golden Civic Foundation helped CFI acquire eight aluminum bear boxes that were
used by two separate trail crews on Mount Elbert throughout the 2023 field season. With eight boxes
CFI was able to outfit the Black Cloud trail crew as originally planned, but also upgrade the North Elbert
crew with new food storage equipment. The bear boxes were a crucial component of both crews’
remote, backcountry basecamps. These top of the line aluminum bear boxes ensured each trail crew’s
provisions were sheilded from the elements, as well as curious wildlife. While black bears are the largest
and most dangerous animal that needs to be kept out of food storage, the smaller wildlife like birds and
rodents are more commonly the issue. These bear boxes prevent these little critters from compromising
food storage.
CFI’s backcountry basecamps serve as a safe and tranquil home for trail crews, particularly after grueling
workdays spent at high altitudes. Ensuring the preservation of food for the crew’s sustenance is an easy way to remove stress or anxiety about dealing with a bear/wildlife encounter. Beyond safeguarding
food, they play a pivotal role in fostering safety, both for the crew and the surrounding wildlife, by
averting potential human-bear conflicts. These bear boxes act as deterrents, dissuading curious animals
from associating humans and their belongings with food, thus maintaining a harmonious balance
between humans and nature in these rugged terrains. The funding provided by Golden Civic Foundation
had a positive impact on the 2023 field season. However, these high quality boxes are a long-term asset for the organization and will continue to play an important role in CFI’s future trail reconstruction
projects. With good care, this equipment should last at least 5-7 years and possibly for more than a
decade.”
We @thegoldencivicfoundation are so proud to support great local projects such as this that then the entire community can enjoy.
