Every once in a while I get someone looking at my stuff who just doesn’t understand tiki at all and they verbalize it. I used to be shocked but after 25 years and so many happy customers, now I can just roll with it. It definitely doesn’t happen as often bc I mostly just do tiki shows but us vendors and artists get this kinda stuff all the time.
Every once in a while at the Don’s show in HB we had a random beach crowds come in and on one particular day, Alene had these multi color toucans that take about 8 hours just to glaze, let alone greenware clean up, 2 kiln firings, etc, that we sold back then for $120. This lady hands me a $20 and is holding the $120 toucan and she’s blankly staring at me but I said, “did ya wanna get that?” She says yes, so I kindly say, “oh, it’s $120” which she responds, oh wow, I thought it was kinda expensive for $12” 😂🤪😂🤪😂🤪😂🤪 She was expecting $8 change and I was waiting for another $100. 😂😂😂🤪🤪
I sort of remember vendors around me all laughing about it afterwards. Anyway, I’ll never make people feel bad for not understanding the time and effort put into our work if they’re just stumbling across it… it’s the job of us artists and makers to share a little about our time and efforts so people know the value of what they’re getting.
And some people who’ve never made anything or don’t fully understand the work behind making stuff, won’t get it, but that’s ok too. Tiki decor isn’t for everyone and that’s fine by me!
On that note! 😂 come see me this Sunday June 23rd Noon to afternoon ish at
