We are so excited about this sheet of flash by Ace Harlyn! Ace tattooed on the Bowery with Millie Hull in the 30’s and did the painting on display in the front of the shop of Millie getting tattooed by Charlie Wagner. The sheet is signed 1936, New York City and was in Mike McCabe’s New York City Tattoo Book. In a 1963 article Ace said he tattooed Millie and her partner Tommy Lee, “the longest job he had ever done that took six years” Ace also invented a “sanitary tatu tube” in 1952 which is also on display in the shop on loan from our friend @timmytattsoriginal #nyctattoohistory #nyctattooartist #daredeviltattoomuseum #milliehull #aceharlyn #nyctattoo #tattoohistory .

Today in Brooklyn Magazine an article about the show I’ve curated for the @cityreliquary Museum “Liberty the Tattooed Lady: The Great Bartholdi Statue as Depicted in Tattooing” (link in bio) This has been my main project lately and it’s really exciting for it to pull together. I’m so thankful to all the people who dug through their collections to find some gems for this show (tagged in this post) The museum is open weekends and we’re having an opening reception Friday April 5th. I love the City Reliquary Museum it was started by my friend Dave Herman over 20 years ago starting with a window in his ground floor apartment in Brooklyn and now it’s a really cool collection of New York ephemera. A stunning collection of vintage tattoo art— including pieces never publicly displayed before-shows how the Statue of Liberty has been embraced and embodied by American tattoo artists since the turn of the century. Join us in celebrating this new exhibit at a reception on *Friday, April 5, at 6 pm.* Since its unveiling in 1886, the Statue of Liberty has served as a symbol of New York City and the nation. Received as a gift from France to commemorate the Declaration of Independence and the abolition of slavery, Lady Liberty has long represented ideals often associated with the idea of America: freedom and liberty. Antique flash, vintage photographs, drawings, and other related objects on display in this exhibit show that Lady Liberty has been a popular subject in tattooing for as long as she’s stood in New York Harbor.
