In the very first interview in our new series, “Filmmaker Spotlight”, we are happy to introduce our crew member Timo Haapasaari. Enjoy!
”I’m Timo Haapasaari, a gaffer and lighting programmer, and ICLS (International Cinema Lighting Society) member. My expertise spans DMX-programming, previsualization, as well as practical skills in ropes and knots.
As a gaffer I try to adapt my lighting to the style of the DP I work with. Even though I’ve got an in-built tendency to steer towards a more naturalistic approach, it’s often very rewarding to discover new ways and widen my perspective by stepping out of the comfort zone.
In my toolkit, I rely on the Blackout Lighting Console on iPad for basic setups, and for bigger and more complicated sets, I opt for the ChamSys MQ250M (pictured), my favorite desk. The evolution of lighting fixtures over the recent 10 years or so has not only revolutionized the way we work with them but also expanded the required amount of information one must have in their toolkit nowadays. The Lumenradio Stardust, capable of handling 4-8 universes in one, makes my life much easier.
The Creamsource Vortex8 is my current workhorse for several reasons: great light quality, weather durability, and ease of use. I’ve also closely collaborated with Blackout Lighting Console since they started in the business. I find the most interesting part of my job to be its dynamic nature, problem-solving, and creativity.
Sharing knowledge is invaluable to me, be it on set or online. For example, I would never had learned how to operate a lighting console in the time I did if I hadn’t gotten all that help from more experienced colleagues from all over the world. So I always try to pass on everything I’ve learned. Our industry continues to develop technically, and we should keep pace with it while also paying more attention to safety and implementing new best practices to replace the old ‘this is how we’ve always done it’ mentality. This mindset keeps me motivated to seek out fresh opportunities while respecting more traditional methods.”
