The truth about Greg Oden is that doctors failed him. You’ve probably heard us talk a lot about microfracture knee surgery, you could make the argument that no player was impacted more by the now-defunct surgery than Oden.
In the 90’s and 2000’s, Microfracture knee surgery was supposed to be a revolutionary procedure for players with debilitating knee cartilage. Instead, it made it nearly impossible for players to return to full strength. Greg Oden received three (!) microfracture surgeries in the first five (!) years of his career. On one instance, he thought he was getting a simple clean up, but when he woke up, he discovered that doctors actually performed microfracture. Other players that received microfracture and never returned to full form include Tracy McGrady, Penny Hardaway, Jamal Mashburn, Chris Webber and several others.
