trevboddy An overnight in Fort Lauderdale prior to jazz cruise, I found the cheapest beachfront American motel I have stayed in for decades. Looking like one half Bruce Goff and one half Hungarian Organics, there is a rusticated stone elevator tower wrapped by a spiral ramp. Built in 1951 as "The Jolly Roger," it is heritage-listed, but you can tell by the Grannie furniture that the owners do not realize what they got, or should I say goff!

The "ARTHUR ERICKSON ON FILM" series I have curated for the Vanc. Int. Film Centre opens on Friday, June 14 with a talk/panel, followed by a screening of the 1994 Hollywood feature "Intersection." Inspired by pre-production tours of the houses and UBC MOA with Arthur, Richard Gere plays a very Erickson-like architect, married to classmate Sharon Stone. A crucial scene is shot in “his” Museum of Anthropology, and my speaker Nick Milkovich FRAIC will talk about crafting the special model for the film seen here, and original location manager Christine Haebler will speak about linking the production team to A.E. This program falling on the precise 100th anniversary of Erickson's birth is now sold out, but tickets remain for the different programs on June 16 and 18, details at /series/erickson-on-film/ @raic_irac @aianational @aia_la @riba #arthurericksondesign

PLAINS PEOPLE: from left: arts writer Alison Gillmor (daughter of my arch prof Doug) in her Winnipeg house designed by Wolfgang Gerson (my UBC colleague/mentor when starting teaching); Susan Algie and husband Jim (she edited my first book on Alta Arch); and Dyde House film producer Max Amerongen. A fine brunch here after screening, panel and my “Why Erickson Matters” lecture at ADFF.

My dear friend SUSAN JONES FAIA’s unusually articulate acceptance speech for Seattle’s AIA Gold Medal for 2024. Her undergraduate Stanford philosophy studies show in the high quality of her writing, be it on mass timber or the timbers of Bellingham, where she grew up.

Helping GEORGE BAIRD FRAIC launch his last book at Inform in 2016. Last weekend in Toronto, I was honoured to be one of his eulogists at a memorial at Daniels School of Architecture at One Spadina.

METROPOLITAN MOMENT. Just stepped out of a Mirvish theatre matinee on Yonge Street (hilarious Glasgow musical reworking: “Pride and Prejudice—Sort Of”) and into this huge pro—Palestinian demo, on a sunny Sunday with a minus 20 windchill!

Dashing through the (non-)snow, here is grandson Aurelio’s daycare Xmas concert. I know Christmas Carols are not possible in multi-culti Vancouver now, but I am not sure this justifies the one other song performed by the little ones: Queen’s “We will Rock You, Rock You!” In a proud family tradition (I played a tree in Grade One, terrified of a public role!) he cowers with Adair offstage. Younger brother Caetano, 15 months, was transfixed with the spectacle, especially since he’ll be attending the very same daycare (wonderful, my daughter is on the board!), starting February.

MORE MUSIC AND DANCE FROM PELIATAN, BALI—turn up the sound!! This dancer is under 13 but already a virtuoso, maybe a diva, and many of the gamelan players are not much older. The guy in yellow sitting on the stage was an active snd charming two year-old when we spent many weeks in this same family compound, and is the son of Siti Dewi (see my other recent FB and Instagram postings from Bali.)

THE MIRACLE OF TIME AND FRIENDSHIP! Carrying on from my last reel, these are some of the very girls who learned these steps in front of me in 1977 from their grandfathers. The guy in yellow sneaking through them was 2 back then and a real little character, eldest son of one of the most radiant women I know. She is Peliatan Brahmin and royal family member Ibu Siti Dewi, who ran the 50 cents-per-night Mandala Losmen then. Please watch for my FB posting soon when I tell what happened to Siti, and Peliatan in the 46 years since!
