“AN EXTREMELY dangerous” Hurricane Beryl, packing winds of up to 215 kilometres per hour, was last night barrelling towards Tobago and the south-east Caribbean. Although the island was mostly spared, other islands in its path are bracing for a direct hit according to the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Services. The Express’ Photographic team was across both islands today, where we captured these images of the weather and its impact. 📸: -Jermaine Cruickshank -Ishmael Salandy -Dexter Philip #trinidadandtobago #trinidadandtobago🇹🇹 #trinidad #trini #trinidadnews #trinidadexpress #expressnews #expressnewspaper #news #current #instagram #crime #follow #like #media #breakingnews #viral #trending #politics #noticias #new #sports #tv #photography #currentaffairs #weather #hurricane

Via the TTMS: The Hurricane Warning for Tobago has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning. At 11 am, Hurricane Beryl was located at 12.4N latitude, 61.3 W longitude. The potential for hurricane force winds has decreased significantly as Hurricane Beryl moves away from the island. The possibility of impacts from tropical storm force winds still exists. Periods of showers and extended periods of rain are expected. Gusty winds are expected in heavy showers and thunderstorms that can still occur. The likelihood of landslides remains in areas so prone. Hazardous seas have been observed with large, battering waves and mariners should continue to expect significant wave heights, posing danger to small craft, coastal and offshore activities. Strong currents and choppy seas will make navigation hazardous. #trinidadandtobago #trinidadandtobago🇹🇹 #trinidad #trini #trinidadnews #trinidadexpress #expressnews #expressnewspaper #news #current #instagram #crime #follow #like #media #breakingnews #viral #trending #politics #noticias #new #sports #tv #photography #currentaffairs

Tobago is operating under a State of Emergency according to Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, as the island prepares for a direct hit from approaching category four hurricane, Beryl. Speaking at a news conference a short while ago Augustine stated that as a result, the island’s healthcare services have been limited to emergency care at the Roxborough and Scarborough General Hospitals, while all schools will remain closed until further notice. Elective surgeries scheduled for tomorrow have been cancelled while health centres will remain closed. Those employed by the THA have also been asked to stay home with the exception of essential workers which include road maintenance workers, public health workers, CEPEP and URP workers, agricultural workers and property managers. Supermarkets and variety stores have been asked to remain open for at least three more hours today to ensure that members of the public in need of supplies can access them before the hurricane makes landfall. Tobago’s Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), Augustine said would be making use of the traditional radio systems at its shelters as well as Starlink services gifted to it by TTSalvage, the company contracted to remove the overturned Gulfstream vessel. Augustine asked residents to prepare themselves, with extra batteries, kerosene, canned foods and to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety over the course of the night. He pleaded with those on the island to be vigilant while drawing reference to the impact of 1936 hurricane Flora. “It is critical that you do not waste this afternoon frolicking. Get your house in order,” he said.
