If these shelves could talk, Vol. 3 🎙️ Supporting the work of amazing makers is core to our mission and there’s no maker closer to my heart than my father, whose work as a carpenter in North Carolina was a big part of our early shop days. We worked together on this big ol’ beautiful statement shelf for our second Salt & Sundry location, which opened on S Street in 2014. It was inspired by old mercantile shops, their shelves stacked high with orderly rows of goods and sundries. We painted it a rich black and I installed a textured wallpaper on the back to evoke old pressed tin. 🥫 When we opened Little Leaf in that same space in 2016, the shelf morphed into a perfect perch for lush pothos, philodendron, pots and more. 🪴 When our chapter came to a close in that space, I salvaged the shelves to bring over to our newly expanded shop in the Union Market District. We gave them a fresh coat of paint and voilà, a decade later, they’re ready for their third iteration as our glowing wall of candles. ❤️‍🔥 Repurposing such a special piece brings lots of sentimental energy to our new shop, a reminder of the winding, rewarding, often challenging path here, as well as our evolving aesthetic. 💫 A special shoutout to @brklwn for the original design which lives on a decade later. In the last month alone, arrivals include legendary NYC piano bar (@sidgoldsdc ), bouncy ramen and boozy boba hangout (@eatramen ), and salad stall (@kennyskale ). And fast-growing chains like Boston-based @greco and @jinyaramenbar are en route to the same 4th Street block this summer. The consumer market appears to be there: some 3.5 million people visit the Northeast neighborhood each year, according to its developer @weareedens , and about 70 residents move in per month.
