BOOOOOOM - the first signs of mycelial activity in the @urban_myco PFTEK tub inoculated with St. George's Mushroom (posh name: calocybe gambosa) liquid culture!!!!!! This is the first thing that I have inoculated with this to show growth - and no surprise really because these PFTEK kits are RAPID, fungafam. I also love reusing the tubs for liquid culture - a GREAT test size so if something goes wrong you haven't really wasted much, and they are small so you don't struggle for space. In fact, the CG liquid culture was made using one of these tubs - poetic, really. This bodes well. It looks like calocybe gambosa MAY be able to be grown and fruited at home.... early days of course... but promising! RAPID colonisation here, Fungafam! As the box says, the @urban_myco PFTEK cake was only mixed into this home pasteurised CV (very coarse C - you can see in the 3rd photo) on 02 Apr 2024 - and the 2nd photo os what it looks like today on 07 Apr 2024. It is TIME, Fungafam! These PFTEK kits from @urban_myco absolutely look like the business! Wonderful thick white mycelium has grown from the inoculation with Flammulina Velutipes liquid culture from @mycopunks . And despite the different inoculation volumes, I see no difference between the tubs; I suspect you might even get away with inoculating with even lower volumes The mycelium cakes came out VERY easily. The tub has a very slight slope on the sides and it really helps to get the cake out; a little squeeze and out it pops. You can see how little is left in the tubs after. Also you can see how easy these are going to be to clean... and then I plan to re-use! More to follow on that. One tub, I broke up the cake from and mixed in with home pasteurised coco coir/husk and vermiculite substrate into a clean plastic tub. The handle holes in the tub are perfect for taping with micropore tape to act as air filters. Then I simply cling filmed the top and secured with some more micropore - and was careful to no clingfilm over the air filters. This will need some colonisation time, and then, we fruit. I'm particularly interested in how this one goes as I used very chunky coco husk in the substrate - as you can see! The rabbit hole deepens, Fungafam We begin the odyssey into using liquid culture, making liquid culture, making homemade substrate, and all other kinds of cool stuff! Huge thanks to @mycopunks and @urban_myco for making this possible. I won a competition for some PFTEK tubs from urban myco, and they came good on their word and sent me 3. @mycopunks is a friend, a naughty friend, and sent me a wonderful gift of some of their gourmet mushroom liquid cultures, basically everything I need to get cracking with making liquid cultures of my own, some test products, and also some goodies. Check my separate post on that incredibly generous gift. So, these photos show where we stand on day one of the flammulina velutipes adventure - see my reel (specifically the caption of that reel) for what the ultimate plans are: @mycopunks Inoculated agar plate Inoculated milo grain (test product) Inoculated all in one grow bag (test product) @urban_myco Inoculated PFTEK tubs x 2 Was it easy?: Yep. Used a room with minimal air movement (small, shut door, no soft furnishings, etc.). Cleaned everything down with rubbing alcohol - paying particular attention to the ports for injection. Shook up the syringe to break up mycelium clumps. Injected the various amounts required. And now these have been tucked away to colonise somewhere warm. I'm confident pretty well anyone can do this. What do I think of the products?: I really like the stuff from mycopunks. It is all robust plastic bag. It looks super clean. The liquid culture had visible mycelium in, and definitely did need shaking as per instructions - but it was easy. The self healing ports are a breeze. The instructions were clear. The PFTEK tubs from @urban_myco are neat - they have a small size which is great for a house as bunged full of stuff as mine - I like that! They feel robust. They are well sealed. They have self healing injection ports. And interestingly... I bet they could be autoclaved/pressure cooked and re-used with a bit of tinkering. That's a solid win if it is the case.
