Kayle is a facilitator and artist living on the western banks of Michi gami (Lake Michigan). In 2019, she founded Other Dust, a social practice specializing in fostering interdependent creativity and living through an animistic lens. She holds a BFA from MIAD (2015) and their work has been featured in both national and international exhibitions, screenings, and residencies. She co-founded the Grilled Cheese Grant (Milwaukee, WI) in 2016– administering and organizing with After School Special until 2019. Karbowski now teaches at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, local folk schools, hosts workshops in southern Wisconsin and online, and regularly volunteers and donates their services.
.
Her recent studio projects emphasize the relationship between material and symbol. The resulting pieces relish in the slippage of poetics– they are sometimes disjointed or fragmentary but arranged together to create a distinct impression. She jumps between mediums often; following what she's most attracted to working in at the time. Lately this has been smaller works combining 3D scanning and printing, plush sculpture and quilting that then come together in larger installations. Material, color, treatment, sourcing, and position all hold equal importance in the compositions. A materials list often serves as the statement. Stinging nettle, glitter, plant-dyed fabric, spandex, spit, sacred well water, magic 8 ball juice, second-hand Virgin Marys, elderberries, waves, vibrators, photos of her hand touching things, non-human intelligences, 3d scans, and ultraviolet light.
