Is there such a thing as Sustainable Aviation?
Recently, the first long-haul passenger flight using 100% SAF took place!
SAF can reduce lifecycle greenhouse emissions by up to 70% compared to conventional fuels.
However, SAF currently represents only about 0.1% of global aviation fuel use.
There are also challenges: The UK government’s Jet Zero Strategy relies heavily on SAF for decarbonization. But, SAF is not carbon-free.
A Royal Society report also highlighted challenges for SAF types, including land use conflicts for biofuels and renewable energy requirements for hydrogen, ammonia, and synthetic fuels production.
So is this really sustainable?
