MOKO Style - Blurred Technique
In Hashizume’s recent works, you’ll notice a predominance of vibrant background colors. This series adopts the “MOKO” (meaning “blurred”) technique, which the artist has been exploring lately. Compared to his previous sharply-defined pieces, the colors in this new body of work are more softened, exuding a greater sense of approachability.
Moreover, the figures depicted in much of Hashizume’s art are portrayed in profile, with fewer direct face-on perspectives. In his MIRROR series, the artist aims to create portrait-like paintings that function as mirrors, allowing viewers to reflect on their own inner selves.
This shift towards the MOKO style’s gentle aesthetics, the side-on character poses, and the introspective MIRROR series all demonstrate the evolving depth and nuance in Hashizume’s creative practice. His works invite the audience to engage with a more intimate and contemplative visual experience.

💧One more week until “eyewater+” drops!
“eyewater+” marks @yuyahashizume ’s debut exhibition in Macau. Born in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, in 1983, Hashizume is known for his illustrative style reminiscent of the popular Japanese manga “Doraemon” by Fujiko Fujio. His background in brand and product development before pursuing art has significantly influenced his current creations and endeavors.
Hashizume’s signature series “eyewater” features cartoon characters against a contrasting single-color background with simple and rounded outlines. The characters are depicted in moments of vulnerability, with a single tear running down their faces.
In preparation for each exhibition, including this “eyewater+” exhibition, Hashizume follows his creative principle of “experiencing each city and country firsthand”. This approach allows him to immerse himself in the city’s culture, capturing nuanced impressions that he later integrates into his artwork.
❔Hashizume leaves us with a question: Why are the characters crying? Find out why on June 4 at Artelli Macau.
