NJ Transit riders are paying 15 percent more for train and bus fares as of today.
Despite weeks of problems on the railroads, including multiple hours long train delays, the agency did not postpone the fare hike as many hoped.
The increase marks the first time in nine years that NJ Transit has raised its fares.
NJ Transit says it needs the extra revenue from the fare hike to fill a budget gap. Beginning next year, the agency will impose an annual 3 percent fare increase.
