“By the Love of Those Unloved”—the gallery’s first exhibition of work by Stanley Whitney (@stanley.whitney ) in New York—closes today, July 3, at the gallery’s 980 Madison Avenue location. Inspired by jazz, Whitney defines a space within which to improvise, each painting setting a unique group of chromatic and spatial harmonies in motion. Laying down one vivid color at a time, the artist establishes relationships between each area, its neighbors, and the composition as a whole, employing gestural brushwork to juxtapose hues applied with varied degrees of opacity. “Giants”—the first major exhibition of the Dean Collection, owned by musical icons Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys—closes on Sunday, July 7, at the Brooklyn Museum. The exhibition includes work by Derrick Adams, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Titus Kaphar, and Deana Lawson. Expansive in their collecting habits, the Deans, both born and raised in New York, champion a philosophy of “artists supporting artists.” “Giants” refers to the renown of legendary artists, the impact of canon-expanding contemporary figures, and some of the monumental works in the collection. “Punctum”—the first exhibition in the United States to center exclusively on Anselm Kiefer’s photography—closes tomorrow, July 3, at Gagosian, 976 Madison Avenue, New York. Returning to perennial motifs and images, the photographs on view reinforce the continuity of themes such as ruin and destruction, and growth and renewal, across Kiefer’s oeuvre, with subjects ranging from sunflowers and snow-covered fields to dense cityscapes. Kiefer’s debut solo exhibition in Greece is running concurrently at Gagosian in Athens. It features new and recent paintings, sculpture, and photography. Lauren Halsey’s installation “keepers of the krown” is currently on view in “Stranieri Ovunque—Foreigners Everywhere,” an exhibition curated by Adriano Pedrosa (@adrianopedrosa ) for the 60th Biennale di Venezia (@labiennale ). In this work, Halsey (@summaeverythang ) strategically invokes a New Kingdom–era Egyptian architectural form typically used for temples venerating female deities to adorn six columns with portraits of cultural figures and community and family members who are all significant to the history of Los Angeles. The column pictured here depicts four-time Grammy-nominated musical visionary Patrice Rushen (@patrice.rushen ). Rushen’s dedication to music is funneled into her teaching position at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, as well as into her community engagement work with various LA-based organizations to mentor and establish young musicians in underserved communities. Gagosian is pleased to announce “The Grief Paintings,” an exhibition of new paintings by Helen Marden, opening on July 24 at Gagosian, Park & 75, New York. Begun in 2023 as Marden cared for her husband, Brice, and made over the months following his passing, the “Grief Paintings” are intimately scaled abstractions created with resin, powdered pigment, ink, and natural objects. Flowing layers of vivid color and assemblages of feathers, shells, and sea glass extend beyond the paintings’ circular supports. Imbued with the spirit of life, love, and creativity, this body of work takes on new meaning in accord with the poem “Growing Up in America” by Rene Ricard, a longtime friend of the couple. Happy birthday to Louise Bonnet (@louisebonnetstudio ), who was born on this day, July 2, in Geneva! Last fall, Gagosian held an exhibition of ten new paintings by the artist in New York. The show, titled “30 Ghosts,” focused on the lives that precede and follow our own—each the center of its own personal universe, like connected chain links—and with ideas of continuity and the future. On the occasion of the exhibition, Gagosian hosted a conversation between Louise Bonnet and Stefanie Hessler (@steffihessler ), director of Swiss Institute in New York, inside the gallery. Head to “Gagosian Quarterly” via the link in our bio to watch the full conversation. __________ #LouiseBonnet #Gagosian Installation views, “Louise Bonnet: 30 Ghosts,” Gagosian, 541 West 24th Street, New York, November 8–December 22, 2023. “Technology always shapes music if you think about it. In the 1920s, the orchestra was at its peak—classical orchestras playing great works by composers who were like rock stars.” —Trevor Horn The mind behind some of the most legendary pop stars of the 1980s and ’90s, including Grace Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Yes, and the Buggles, produced one of the music industry’s most unexpected and enjoyable recent memoirs: “Trevor Horn: Adventures in Modern Recording. From ABC to ZTT.” In a piece for “Gagosian Quarterly,” Young Kim (@youngkim.xyz ) reports on the elements that make the book, and Horn’s life, such a treasure to engage with. “Theaster Gates: Le chant du centre” opens today, June 30, at LUMA Arles (@luma_arles ) in France. “Le chant du centre,” which translates to “The Song of the Center,” is an intervention by Theaster Gates (@theastergates ) that transforms the Grande Halle of LUMA Arles into a ceramic workshop. At the center of the workshop, Gates continues the “Temple”—the artist’s series of sanctuary-like spaces intended to inspire contemplation and dialogue. Here, the “Temple” is the central installation, made from wooden ware boards (used to store in-progress pottery) that hold his personal vinyl collection, a bar, and other artworks. Conceived as a durational and demonstrative installation, the work will be in constant evolution as new wares and sculptures are produced and fired, thereby creating new forms of engagement with each visit. Wishing a happy birthday to Richard Wright, who was born on this day, June 29, in London! An exhibition of new works by Theaster Gates (@theastergates ), titled “Black Mystic,” closes today, June 29, at Gagosian, Le Bourget. Employing industrial roofing materials, Gates extends his series of tar paintings or “torch works” into monumental tapestries that are installed in the expansive venue at Le Bourget. Continuing the formal experimentation in his practice, this body of work sees Gates further his material investment in rubber torch down, delivering his tar paintings to the scale of a roof. “Theaster Gates: Le chant du centre” opens this weekend at LUMA Arles (@luma_arles ). “Le chant du centre,” which translates to “The Song of the Center,” is an intervention by the artist that transforms the Grande Halle of LUMA into a functioning clay studio. __________ #TheasterGates #Gagosian Installation views, “Theaster Gates: Black Mystic,” Gagosian, Le Bourget, April 13–July 29, 2024. “Andy Warhol & Keith Haring: Party of Life” opened today, June 28, at Museum Brandhorst (@museumbrandhorst ) in Munich. The exhibition relays the cosmos of the 1980s—MTV, discos, vogueing, hip-hop, New Wave, and graffiti—and traces Keith Haring’s and Andy Warhol’s friendship through those years. The exhibition reveals parallels in their artistic identity and demonstrates how their works from the 1970s and 1980s, created at a time of extreme sociopolitical tension, are still highly relevant today. Bringing together famous key works as well as film, photography, archival material, posters, records, and everyday objects, the exhibition also highlights projects created with other artists, including Richard Avedon and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
