Michelle Cotton is the new artistic director of Kunsthalle Wien. Today you get a preview of her programme starting in September. The exhibition programme will continue to bring new ideas, research and artistic practices representing the diverse communities of Vienna as well as inviting artists from non-European countries. It starts with the first solo exhibitions in Austria by Aleksandra Domanović and Diego Marcon. Domanović studied in Vienna and uses sculpture, video and graphic art to examine scientific and technological developments, among others. Diego Marcon will present his new film "La Gola" (2024), that has been co-commissioned with Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève and Kunstverein in Hamburg. We also inaugurating an annual commission for a temporary, site-specific artwork for the exterior of the Museumsquartier building, starting with a text-based work by Nora Turato. A series of group surveys based on original research will punctuate the programme. The first of these, “Radical Software: Women, Art & Computing 1960–1991” will present the work of fifty artists giving a feminist perspective on the pre-internet era of computing. It is co-produced with Mudam Luxembourg — Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean. Kunsthalle Wien’s innovative and impactful educational programmes are a key artistic focus. Under the new direction they will receive more resources, prominence and visibility in a new barrier-free Atelier for education and inclusion programmes. -- #MichelleCotton #KunsthalleWien #Exhibitions2024 #AleksandraDomanović #NoraTurato #DiegoMarcon #RadicalSoftware

Valentin Hämmerle – to iron a curtain At Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz, Valentin Hämmerlecites the materiality of his diploma project: pressed polylactic acid panels create a surface that simultaneously conceals and reveals. His installation in the exhibition 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗿𝗲. 𝗞𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 demonstrated his acute awareness of the principles of stage design and evident pleasure in their transgression, while opening his practice toward multiple artistic media. Valentin Hämmerle studied Stage and Film Design with Bernhard Kleber at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. In his practice, Hämmerle balances commercial commissions for the creative industry, work for the film and music sectors, and freelance projects in performing and visual arts. Building upon his studies in stage design, he now increasingly embraces a cross-media approach. -- Installation views: Come as You Are. Rene Matić is part of the duo-show 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗶ć / 𝗢𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼. 𝗝𝗔𝗭𝗭., for which Matić developed new works dealing with Josephine Baker. For “voice”, Matić appropriates the specific sound of church bells, referencing the Catholic Church’s deeply racist outrage at Josephine Baker’s visit to Vienna in 1928. When the dancer arrived, a large crowd of fans cheered at the train station; at the same time, the bells of the Paulanerkirche chimed to warn the population of her “sinfulness”. At Kunsthalle Wien, the artist lets the sound of church bells ring out through the space at intervals. They call for a prayer, but this time not in fear of, but in homage to Josephine Baker, aiming to give the dancer her voice back. The exhibition is on view until July 28 at Kunsthalle Wien Museumsquartier.
