So, introducing myself @emmaprice_artist as part of the Yutori exhibition ~ a few quick fire snippets about myself and my inspiration! I paint abstract and semi abstract landscapes in my home studio in Surrey, I have also been magazine Art Director, as well as a hyper-realism pencil artist! A few quirky things to know: - I might sound antipodean to many, but was in fact born in Warwickshire; when I was eight our family emigrated to the Australia, where I lived for 20 years - I can’t drive … legally anyway! - An avid walker, next April I am undertaking two marathons in two days for charity … in Jordan!🇯🇴 - Jojo Cordelia is the mistress of the house, is very contrary and only talks to me when she fancies; despite being the ‘feeder’, it’s not a given she’ll chat 🙄😻 Bridget Riley has been a lifelong favourite ~ a female artist who has truly held her own, a true legend and source of inspiration. Having always been a fan of Op Art, the reverberation’s of line from her early 60s work, to me is as much about landscape as it is about memory and emotion. Easy to loose yourself in! Here’s what works for us 👇👇 Ali: As part of my process I mix my paint with acrylic glaze medium and pouring medium to get a more fluid and translucent paint. I build up many layers using silicone tools, squeegees and bank cards (anything goes!) to apply the paint on a textured surface and only tend to use a paint brush for applying thinned acrylic inks. Emma: My process involves many layers of lean paint, applied predominantly in an up (and at times down) the canvas motion; the blending process is important to the overall look/feel of seamless colour/tonal transition, achieved through a quick figure-eight painterly action over these thin layers, with a short stumpy bristle brush, so no discernible brush marks are visible… the desired outcome to evoke a sense of balance and harmony not consciously recognized in the viewer. That the use of colour and tone evokes a deeper emotional response. Joy: Disrupting what I’ve already created is a hugely important part of my process. I’ll often add lines that cut right through a composition, allowing me to see it differently and turn the image upside down and re-evaluate. This leads to constant surprises for me and therefore more exciting outcomes. Rachel: That moment when I have lit my sage, incense, drank some coffee and am surrounded by my organised chaos poised to paint. If I don’t do this the outcome is not the same. This is my calling in moment, tapping into something else. Sophie: Here, I’m building up glazes which add depth and history to the painting. I’m also exploring form at the same time, playing with the balance of the piece, both in terms of value and composition. We’re busy preparing for “Yutori”, our five artist, group exhibition, presented by @the.art.buyer in Thames Ditton, July 6 - August 3 and we’re looking forward to chatting with all our visitors about our techniques, processes and inspirations.
