In its golden age, Columbia Pictures produced some of American cinema’s most iconic films across a panoply of varied styles and popular genres. Musicals, noir films, westerns, screwball comedies, war movies. Locarno77 celebrates 100 years of Columbia Pictures with The Lady with the Torch, a 40-film Retrospective that pays tribute both to beloved classics and unheralded gems produced at the Hollywood studio between the dawn of sound and the late 1950s. Starting in 1924, the masthead of Columbia Pictures was the Lady with the Torch, a Statue of Liberty-like female figure draped in the American flag. In the 100 years since, it has become instantly recognizable to film lovers everywhere. This retrospective, curated by Ehsan Khoshbakht and done in partnership with @cinemathequesuisse , will feature films by major auteurs like Howard Hawks, Frank Borzage, Dorothy Arzner, Fritz Lang, Frank Capra, and John Ford, as well as lesser known filmmakers like Max Nosseck, Phil Karlson, and William A. Seiter. Treasured stars like Rita Hayworth, Jean Arthur, Orson Welles, Rosalind Russell, Cary Grant, Boris Karloff, and the Three Stooges will also make an appearance. It is to this varied spectrum of artists, performers, and beloved figures of fun that the festival pays tribute.

Gina Lollobrigida would have turned 97 today. But in the photo, taken in 1949 by Ernesto Steinemann, she was only 22. It was the fourth edition of the Festival. This year's journey begins in the Piazza Grande on August 4 with a Prefestival screening – presented by la Mobiliare – of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982), the eternal children's classic by Steven Spielberg, and then on August 6 the premiere of “Fiore mio” (2024) – presented by UBS –, the new documentary by author Paolo Cognetti (“Le otto montagne”'s writer). Both screenings will be free. On August 7, the opening of Locarno77 will feature the projection of King Vidor's “The Crowd” (1928), a milestone of silent cinema, with – as has become tradition – the musical accompaniment of the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana.

👑 Actor and film producer Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk ), a true Indian superstar, will receive our career achievement award – the Pardo alla Carriera – at #Locarno77 ! Popularly known in India as ‘King Khan’ – the emperor (‘Baadshah’) of Bollywood – Khan is a living symbol of the vibrance and vitality of Hindi-language cinema. Over a thirty-year career, the actor has featured in high-profile collaborations with some of India’s most prominent directors and stars and achieved major popular success and international recognition, as when the French government awarded Khan with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007 and the Légion d'honneur in 2014. After a four-year hiatus from filmmaking, Khan returned to the big screen last year with two giant hits, “Pathaan” (2023) and “Jawan” (2023), reaffirming the 58-year-old actor’s status as one of the most beloved Indian stars of his generation. @gionanazzaro , Artistic Director: “To welcome a living legend like Shah Rukh Khan in Locarno is a dream come true. The wealth and breadth of his contribution to Hindi-language cinema is unprecedented. “Family Portrait”, the first feature film by US filmmaker Lucy Kerr, premiered in Locarno just in 2023 in our Concorso Cineasti del Presente section. We are so glad that the movie is having a theatrical release in US, premiering today at Metrograph in New York City, for a week run; and then being screened in Los Angeles and Chicago. And what's next? We wish all the luck to @_lucykerr_ and her superb film! Set at the start of Covid, “Family Portrait” follows a family on an idle but hectic morning when they have planned a group picture. 🚀 Ben Burtt will receive the Vision Award Ticinomoda at #Locarno77 ! The beeping of R2-D2, the swoosh of the lightsaber, Darth Vader’s mechanical breathing, Chewbacca's roar, WALL-E’s electronic warble, and many other unforgettable sounds of cinema history... All of these came from the mind of a single man: Ben Burtt, legendary sound designer, editor, and voice actor behind the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” franchises, among the many films he has collaborated on, from “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) to “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” (1989) by Steven Spielberg. ✍️ The #LocarnoCriticsAcademy is our workshop in film criticism that gives young writers a crucial entry point into the world of festivals. For 11 days during #Locarno77 the participants will cover the Festival internationally for @mubinotebook – with Deputy Editor Chloe Lizotte co-organizing the workshop starting from this year – and nationally for @swissinfo.ch_en as well as engage in extensive dialogues and workshops with writers, critics, curators, festival directors, and filmmakers. These critics have varied interests and styles, writing diaristically, historically, academically, commercially – but always, crucially, with imaginative flair and critical rigor.
