Since their creation in the 18th century, the carabinieri have been considered an elite corps. Battleships since the 1st Empire, they belong to the so-called reserve cavalry and distinguish themselves, with the cuirassiers, during major charges against the enemy. However, they are distinguished from the Cuirassiers by their typical copper helmet with red caterpillar.
