[On this day / Na današnji dan] On this day in 2004, the Moderna galerija in Ljubljana opened a major survey exhibition of Slovenian art from 1985 to 1995, entitled Razširjeni prostori umetnosti (Expanded Spaces of Art). The curators of the exhibition, Igor Zabel and Igor Španjol, presented artistic production in the context of the end of postmodernism with works that follow the postmodernist line of "individual mythologies" and "autopoetics" and the deconstruction of abstract modernism, while at the same time - as the title of the exhibition implies - highlighting the practices of contemporary art, which follow the expanded notion of art and the entry of art outside art spaces and contexts, including "site-specific" projects, the creation of parallel institutions, art in public space, etc. In addition to visual art, the exhibition and catalogue include examples and reflections from architecture, design, theatre, dance and film. Fotografije / Photos: Dejan Habicht. [On this day] On this day 30 years ago, the exhibition “Place”, curated by Igor Zabel and Lara Štrumej opened in the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana. The exhibition included photographies by the artists: Lewis Baltz, Jean-Marc Bustamante, Willie Doherty, Jochen Gerz, and Angela Grauerholz. In conceptualizing the exhibition, Igor Zabel largely related to the Freud’s concept of “das Unheimliche”, W. Benjamin's concept of aura (from “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction"), and work by Eugen Atget. However, as Zabel wrote in the exhibition catalogue, this exhibition also provided an insight into the importance of coincidence in curatorial work. “This exhibition is – if I speak from my personal experience, and I feel more and more that this is the only honest way to speak – connected with the question of coincidence. 'At the beginning' there were no concepts, no central notions or general ideas. There were only incidental encounters and (often quite uncertain) memories of them; there were some works seen somewhere... or just some half-forgotten phrase ... Thus, incidental memories and fragments brought me round to thinking not only about 'place' and about Atget, about Benjamin and Freud, but also about a number of contemporary artists who in their work deal with similar problems.“ Quotation: Igor Zabel, “Slike in kraji” / Places, Moderna galerija, Ljubljana, 1994 Photographies: Lado Mlekuž, Matija Pavlovec. [On this day / Na današnji dan] On this day 30 years ago, the retrospective exhibition OHO, curated by Igor Zabel, closed in the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana. The exhibition contributed significantly to the understanding and actualization of the most interesting and important neo-avant-garde art movement in Slovenia in the 1960s, as OHO described Zabel. OHO included various phases and practices – from the reistic utopia of the post-anthropocentric world of "things", happenings and performance art, arte povera, land art and conceptualism, to film, literature, visual and concrete poetry, and theory. In 1971, the OHO group dissolved itself, and its members founded the Šempas Family, with which they wanted to follow the vision of the intertwining of art and life. To the still alive OHO legacy is dedicated also a documentary film directed by Damjan Kozole and produced by ZavodVertigo. We are honored that our association and its program manager, Urška Jurman, are participating in the preparation of this film. Photos: catalogues of the OHO retrospective exhibition, 1994 and 2007 & photos from the filming of a documentary film about OHO (Zala Opara/Zavod Vertigo) / Na današnji dan pred 30 leti se je v Moderni galeriji v Ljubljani zatvorila retrospektivna razstava OHO, ki jo je kuriral Igor Zabel.
