This year, and every year, a number of folks in our group participated in Pride for the first time at the NYC march—in their countries of origin, LGBTQ gatherings are illegal or extremely dangerous to attend.
Yesterday, these same individuals were cheered on by thousands of spectators. Instead of being punished for being who they are, they were celebrated for it. And that’s worth sweating our asses off to experience!

This Pride Month, we’re calling on the Biden administration to demonstrate its commitment to equal rights for LGBTQ people by releasing queer, trans, and HIV-positive asylum seekers from immigration detention—and supporting legislative action that phases out immigration detention altogether.

Yesterday, President Biden issued a proclamation and rule that will effectively shut down the border to asylum seekers when the number of border encounters reaches 2,500 per day for seven consecutive days. The rule is effective immediately.
Immigration Equality's Director of Law & Policy, Bridget Crawford, Responds:
“For queer and trans asylum seekers, asylum is a critical lifeline. LGBTQ people are persecuted around the globe for being who they are. During Pride month the President should be proclaiming his commitment to protect LGBTQ refugees and upholding his promise to them, not enacting policies that will result in the preventable persecution, torture and death of queer and trans asylum seekers.”

One year ago, President Biden’s asylum ban went into effect, severely limiting access to safety and protection for LGBTQ refugees at our southern border. Vulnerable individuals and families are forced to return to dangerous conditions where they have been targeted with violence, kidnapping, torture, and sexual assault.
Now, President Biden is rumored to use his executive authority soon to shut down the border to asylum seekers, leaving LGBTQ asylum seekers in dangerous and deadly conditions. We reject ANY executive action that attacks our asylum system, and we demand an end to the asylum ban now!

It's Lesbian Visibility Week!
The lesbian community has been and will continue to be a cornerstone of the broader fight for LGBTQ equality! It is important to remember that identifying as Lesbian can include being trans, non-binary, masculine, femme, and more. Today is Transgender Day of Visibility, an opportunity to celebrate the lives of trans people, the power of trans joy, and the struggles that the trans community faces worldwide.
For LGBTQ asylum seekers, our country has been a beacon of freedom, where they can safely arrive and be their authentic selves – we must remain that beacon and protect trans people.
This TDOV, we’d like to share the story of Sasha, a trans woman from Guyana who came to the U.S. to build a better life for herself.
"Since I was five years old, I knew that I was born in the wrong body. I used to love to play with my sister's dolls and dress femininely, but my parents forced me to behave and dress like a boy. My identity also became an issue outside of my home. In Guyana, where I’m from, LGBTQ people are often subjected to widespread discrimination and violence.
My entire life, I’ve had to live my true identity in secret to protect myself from persecution. In 2019, I was nearly attacked by men with machetes, and I knew then that it was time for me to leave Guyana.
Even though coming to the United States still had its challenges, I am learning to love and care for myself. I work full-time as a home health aide and provide domestic support to my sister and her child. I’m in control of my own life now and my destiny.
After all, I made it this far in life because I am fierce!"
Living your truth is an act of resistance, so this Trans Day of Visibility, we stand in solidarity with all trans people who deserve to live as their authentic selves without fear of persecution.

Immigration Equality is excited to announce that we've received a generous award from MacKenzie Scott and @lever4change_ !!re!!_039;s Yield Giving Open-Call!
We were one of 361 grantees selected from a pool of over 6,000 organizations with budgets under $5 million working with people experiencing the greatest need in the United States. We are also one of 23 LGBTQ organizations and 67 immigration organizations to receive this award.
“We are very grateful to MacKenzie Scott and the Yield Giving donor team for such a generous award, which we will use to serve LGBTQ and HIV-positive asylum seekers and refugees,” said Aaron C. Morris, Executive Director of Immigration Equality. “We are honored to be chosen alongside a remarkable pool of social change organizations, including dozens of other LGBTQ and immigrant rights groups. This gift will be a catalyst that will enable Immigration Equality to amplify our efforts to secure justice and equality for queer, trans, and HIV-positive immigrants and families.”
