One of the first full features I shot for @verticalmag was covering the 56th Rescue Squadron before their move to Aviano. Since then I’ve always been fascinated by the CSAR mission. So it was an absolute privilege to have the opportunity to visit the CSAR CTF at Nellis AFB. Providing invaluable insights into the future of CSAR, including the testing of the HH-60W and the integration of Guardian Angel and Isolated Personnel divisions. Serving as a training vessel for the future officers of the esteemed United States Coast Guard, it holds the honor of being the largest tall ship proudly flying the Stars and Stripes, and it is the sole active square-rigger in the esteemed service of the U.S. government. While its primary mission remains the training of cadets, the Eagle graciously assumes the additional mantle of a public relations emissary for both the Coast Guard and the United States itself. We’re conducting flight tests of a novel vertical takeoff and landing uncrewed aerial system for @darpa . The flight tests are intended to prove the efficiency and scalability of a twin proprotor ‘rotor blown wing’ configuration that sits on its tail to take off and land like a helicopter and transitions easily to horizontal forward flight for long-endurance missions, such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting.

An open water training is the final stage in the long journey to becoming a combat search and rescue operator. From the calm waters of a pool to the gentle waves of a lake, men and women of the Colombian Air Force begin their training in controlled environments.
