On Thursday, we explored the roots of racism and how they relate to colonialism in our country.
Thank you to - Andreja Mesarič, anna řičář libánská, Kvet Nguyen a Denis Kozerawski - the speakers at the What About the Margins? seminar, curated by Iva Kovač as part of the exhibition Looking a — way: Othering in/of the (semi)periphery.
It was nourishing and it didn’t even seem that way, and with lectures, screenings and lively discussion, 3 hours flew by.
If by chance you missed it, you can see some photos here and a youtube recording will be up soon.
......
Vo štvrtok sme preskúmavali korene rasizmu a ako súvisia s kolonializmom v našich končinách.
Ďakujeme - Andreje Mesarič, anne řičář libánskej, Kvet Nguyen a Denisovi Kozerawskému - prednášajúcim na seminári A čo okrajové oblasti?, ktorý kurátorsky pripravila Iva Kovač v rámci výstavy Od — vrátiť zrak: Inakosť (na) (polo)periférie(i).
Bolo to výživné a ani sa to nezdalo a s prednáškami, premietaním a živou diskusiou ubehli 3 hodiny.
Ak ste to náhodou zmeškali, tu si môžte pozrieť pár fotiek a čoskoro bude na youtube aj záznam.

20 years of Kontakt
Kontakt Collection
In 2024, Kontakt is celebrating both 20 years of existence and the necessity of focusing on developments and tendencies in art from Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe from the 1960s onward. In this context, a number of events are set to take place across Europe that underline the importance of Kontakt and its attempt to do justice to the mission of representing modern and contemporary art in a particular region of Europe as well as in Europe at large.
Kontakt’s focus lies on art that is highly specific and unique. European culture at large, however, will remain deprived of these riches until it finds ways of broadening the scope of its perception and dialogue to integrate the inputs of these artists, who have been contributing significant works to the history of European art since the late 1950s. Several among these works address models of the future and the possibility of enriching present reality through imaginary modes of thought, thereby embodying a quest for alternative views of reality—or, in the words of Slovak artist Július Koller, for a new “cultural situation.” With its name, Kontakt pays tribute to the work of Július Koller—who created “KONTAKT (Anti-Happening)” (1969) as well as multiple similarly titled work series from the late 1960s onwards. Koller also, in one of his manifestos, called for a “cosmo-humanist” situation as a mode of existence that, viewed in light of our crisis-ridden contemporary world order, is indeed still quite relevant today.

[Forest Encounters: Call for Submissions]
𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒: 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐲, 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐲𝐬
We are looking for representations of different encounters with the forest from both human and non-human perspectives.
The FOREST ENCOUNTERS project explores and proposes diverse imaginaries, concepts, and practices around the following questions: What and how can we learn with and through the forest? What are actual and potential human encounters with the forest? How can we better coexist with the forest? What kind of forests do we want and need in the future?
✍️ We are looking for texts that explore your personal experiences around the forest. We welcome different perspectives of the forest — as the aesthetic, social, political, ecological, metaphysical space, a.o. We enjoy non-traditional writing and work that might not be supported by conventional publishing venues. We look forward to reading about the forest and the encounters that take place inside of it.
We are accepting applications from both individuals and collectives. Six selected works will be published and distributed worldwide in FOREST ENCOUNTERS paperback and e-book, and will also be available online in audio format as a podcast. The authors of the six selected works will receive a forfeiture honorarium of EUR 150.
Looking forward to reading your work – send it our way!

OTO HUDEC
Floating Arboretum
Czech and Slovak Republic Pavilion
Curator Lydia Pribisova
Sound piece and performance: Fero Király
Poeticization of stories: Juliana Sokolová
➡️ April 20-November 24, 2024
The Czech and Slovak Republic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale introduces Oto Hudec:
Floating Arboretum, a project centered on the preservation of endangered trees.
Oto Hudec engages with an archive of narratives portraying a unified effort by a community of activists to halt deforestation and the destruction of trees. He advocates for the rescue of these trees and others endangered globally, envisioning an arboretum as a symbolic sanctuary for trees imperiled by human expansion and extractivism. The project offers a speculative glimpse into a dystopian future where trees are safeguarded in a fictional arboretum.
The endangered trees will be painted by Oto Hudec directly on the façade of the pavilion. The mural will be accompanied in the immediate surroundings of the pavilion by a site-specific installation of a boat with a sculpture of a seed, and by an audio piece and performance.
📍Anyone can get involved in Floating Arboretum via https://floatingarboretum.sng.sk, where they can nominate for rescue their choice of any specific tree with an upsetting fate.
Oto Hudec is a multi-media artist, he creates videos, murals, animations, sculptures, sound pieces, and works for public spaces on the subjects of immigration, refugees and the ekects of globalization on the environment.

For decades in the European peripheries we have ignored considerations about our entanglement in the histories of colonialism and de-colonization that shaped the public discourse in both the Global South and the Global North. The East Central European (ECE) and South East European (SEE) states have for the most part not participated directly in colonization efforts and have, through an anti-imperialist stance during different implementations of state socialisms, expressed a declarative anti-colonial position.
Nevertheless, the European peripheries, historically subordinated to different empires until the beginning of the 20th century, have been affected by the history of colonialism and coloniality. As a result, they have been part of the global relations created through this history.
