Yesterday, we witnessed another level of community spirit at David Crombie Park for Joy in the Park - Celebrating Cultures!    The incredible band Kuné @kuneworld had everyone grooving with their amazing sounds! Our first-ever “Community Potluck” was a hit with delicious dishes from Esplanadians and BBQ from our partner St. Lawrence Market. Local artists showcased their crafts. Kids enjoyed face painting by Linda Epp @facepaintingwithlinda , henna by Noshin Hussain, and the craft table from our partner, St. Lawrence Daycare. Last but not least, Canadian Stage’s raffle added a fun excitement to the event. At the end, the collaboration of all partners spread the joy in the park and everyone shared beautiful moments! Thanks to all artists who shared their work at our artisan marketplace! #tbt From not long ago. My homeland. Where my heart feels complete. So much love . So much gratitude. A reminder of who I am. Of my essence. In each hug. Each smile. Each connection. Time goes by. We live our lives. And every time we go back we still cherish this strong feeling of belonging. My family. I adore you all. I couldn’t not be who I am without you. I have no words to express how I feel when I’m with you. When I’m stepping in this land . When I’m breathing the air and burning my skin with hot sun that shines upon this place . And yes. I am exaggerating because that’s how it feels. Um exagero. Escancarado de amor e gratidão !Um grande delicioso exagero. ❤️

For the month of February, Jamii gave Carte Blanche to artist Aline Morales to design one-of-a-kind programming for our community. Aline chose to explore Forró with us and brought most wonderful artists to our community. Here it is, in Aline’s words: “The theme of February was Forró. Forró played and still plays a significant role in my life, not just musically but also socially! Growing up listening to Forró and attending Forró parties gave me a sense of identity and belonging. I can see this phenomenon happening in many communities here in Toronto—people coming together and bonding through Forró! To design the cycle, I thought about Forró as an entire movement encompassing social, cultural, and environmental aspects. When you dive into a subject, you realize how challenging it is to get to its roots, and the deeper you go, the more you find out! So it was a beautiful dance between a macro optic and a micro optic. What I appreciate about this experience is endless: Personal growth, connecting with amazing people, watching individuals being touched by art… I believe experiences like these are why we decide to pursue our art. Additionally, the practicalities of making the project happen is part of the process — emails, coordinating schedules, being on top of that kind of game - it all became as important as the art itself, for the majority of artists. I hope to take all I’ve learned and be a better administrator of my craft. I really, really enjoy doing it! I’ll take some time off to go back to my homeland, Brazil, to get even more inspired, and then return to Toronto to keep moving forward!!!” Photos by Sabrine S Hakam Supported by @metcalf.foundation Metcalf Foundation’s Gardens of Creation, @canada.council Canada Council for the Arts and Rama Gaming House @rama.gaminghouse .

I am incredibly grateful for the experience of hosting a block printing workshop at Jammii! 🖌️✨ Thank you to each of you who joined, being so open to learning something new. Together, we carved, inked, and stamped beautiful designs, having a great time. I loved seeing how much you enjoyed learning this technique and left wanting to know more about it. Also loved the chance to share a bit about my culture and passion for Forró. 🤍 Thank you all for all the exchange. And, of course, a big thank you to @jamiiesplanade and @alinemorales1 who entrusted me with this amazing task! I can’t wait to do this again!!! Let’s continue spreading creativity and stay inspired! ✨

Designed by Sabrine S. Hakam @sabrineshakam and curated by Aline Morales @alinemorales1 , this month’s Culture Cloths exhibit featured Chita fabric and Forró, a Northeast Brazilian tradition. The discussion intertwined the meaning of Forró for the younger generation with the power of the Chita, also known as the “happiest fabric in the world” due to its colours and flower patterns. Aline also kindly prepared and shared traditional Brazilian food caldinho de feijão (the dean stew) and quentão drink, which were so delicious!

Culture Cloths Forró exhibit is now up at The Jamii Hub until the end of the month. Come on by and check it out!

Don’t forget to click in the bio to register in a new session of Culture Cloths on March 12th. 🪡 ——— The Tuesday Learning workshop series is supported by the @canada.council , @rama.gaminghouse , @torontoartscouncil , @metcalf.foundation and @cgamingcgood #JamiiEsplanade #TheJamiiHub #SabrineSHakam #AlineMorales #JamiiTuesdayLearning #JamiiCultureCloths
