On Tuesday, I had my first surgery ever. After 10+ years of being told “oh it’s most likely just your hormones, just monitor” by 6 different doctors at 3 different practices, I am so relieved to be done with what may be part 1 of this battle with my obstetrical / gynecological health. Over the last decade, I’ve been dealing with symptoms of: - 10-12 day long menstruation - months with 20+ days of bleeding - excruciating and cripplingly painful 2nd day of my period - blood loss that for some time, came out in golf ball sized chunks - dizziness and fatigue - lowered sports performance and energy due to low iron stores from all the bleeding - pain with intercourse - random sharp stabbing pains throughout the month - and SO many more symptoms that multiple doctors had told me to just go on birth control 8+ years before I decided to stop Tuesday’s surgery helped to remove some abnormal growths in my uterus that although was low risk for malignancy, could have certainly affected my ability to conceive in the future. Although this doesn’t solve all the issues, this is the good step forward and I’m just thankful that I didn’t give up on myself & I continued to advocate when no one else was listening. When I was 17, I first went to the orthopedic doctor about my knee pain. He just told me to stop running. When I was 20 I partially tore one of my menisci. When I was 22, I partially tore the other one. People told me that my knees “aren’t meant for running”. But I knew that couldn’t be the answer. At 24 I changed up my training approach completely. Instead of running 4-5 days a week, I started running only 2-3 and lifting 2-4 days a week. I started moving away from the lighter weight rack and began lifting heavier, trusting my body’s ability to heal and support itself. I never got surgery. For 5 years, I didn’t race anything longer than a 10k because I was scared, I was nervous about the doctors being right, that I would injure myself again if I continued running long distances. But this past weekend, I did my 1st half marathon in 5 years. I went from not being able to stand at work for more than 2-3 hours without knee pain to being able to return to the sport that I LOVE simply by changing up my approach. I now can lift heavier than my body weight & never in a million years thought that would be my saving grace. But getting stronger is my lifelong goal now. Just because you are injured does NOT mean you can never return to your sport. Of course, every injury is different and every rehab process is different, but our bodies are capable of SO much more than we imagine if we support it with the right tools. Do you want to keep bumping up the weights but your hands are stopping you from being great? 🧠 Your grip strength may not be as strong due to a lack of targeted grip training or underlying issues such as muscle imbalances, tendon injuries, or nerve compression. Additionally, factors like poor posture, insufficient hand and forearm exercise, and overuse can weaken grip strength over time! If you generally don’t have any pain or hand injuries, try training your grip strength by progressing the weight that you use with your workouts every couple weeks! Practicing exercises that challenge stability, such as single-leg stands, yoga, and balance board activities are awesome ways to develop balance! For my routine, I focus on working on strength moves that go from double leg stance ➡️ staggered stance ➡️ single leg stance to get my legs feeling stronger individually since running requires stability from both sides 🏃🏻‍♀️ Consistent practice in various environments and on uneven surfaces can further improve balance (when your body is ready for it)!
