I am in @sophiessecretpostcard ! I have contributed a postcard to this fab cause, raising funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer charity in London. #sophiespostcard is a secret auction consisting of original postcard-sized artworks, made and donated by professional artists, designers and illustrators, plus up-and-coming artists from the school and the general public. More than 3,000 original postcard sized artworks have been created and auctioned on eBay for the event since the first auction. All artworks will be listed for 10 days on eBay, starting on the 19th of June and ending on the weekend of Sat 29th / Sun 30th June 2024. Traces: 1873 is the printmaking side quest on the edge of my research journey in the footsteps of poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine. During this project, I accumulates a growing stash of materials, debris of my research: old images of London, maps, dictionaries, and of course the texts I pored over day after day... So when I embarked on a journey to discover etching last year at my @arthublondon residency, I summoned my poets to come along, and used this cache of material as a guiding light through my experimentations. I didn’t know where I was going, or what the result would look like, but I was determined to assemble these traces of 1873 London into a visual exploration. In 1872, two giants of French poetry, Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, moved to London together. For the last few years, I have been researching their London lives. I saw the city through their eyes and followed them into secret parts of London. I pored over their letters, immersed myself in their texts… and found traces this hidden world has left into their poems… Today, an introduction of my research has been published in the new issue of Parade Sauvage, a groundbreaking journal dedicated to Rimbaud. Seeing my name in its pages is an incredible feeling, I don’t think I could be more proud!

It started with a strange idea. A persistent question about a poem, that I couldn’t see an answer for, so I started looking for one. It led me on a quest into the margins of Victorian London, following in the footsteps of two French poets who made the city their home for a season. In a few weeks, it will result in a literary journal article, presenting my research, and sharing some of my discoveries. One of my favourite parts of the etching process so far has been inking them and playing with colours!
