So proud to call this man my friend. Instagram and horticulture stand out for me as places where we cheer others on. I joined the Garden Media Guild as a 'nursery and garden centre owner' who wrote for local papers. I have been embraced and welcomed with open arms by fellow writers and creators and I wouldn't have been writing professionally in the way I do now without their help. I am now so happy to be the Treasurer of GMG in an attempt to do my best to support others coming into the trade. Thank you @mike_thegardener and so many others @gdnmediaguild #friendship #horticulture #media

The gorgeous California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), the state flower of California, is a vibrant and hardy perennial native to the western parts of America, particularly thriving in surprise surprise California’s grasslands and open spaces. Becoming an ever increasingly popular plant over here in the U.K. and for very obvious reasons I’m sure you’ll agree. Belonging to the Papaveraceae family, this poppy boasts the most vibrant bright orange cup-shaped flowers that open during the day and close at night or in cloudy weather. It flourishes in well-drained, sandy soils and full sun, often blooming prolifically from late spring through early fall. Renowned for its drought tolerance, the California poppy is a valuable addition to water-wise gardens. Its extensive flowering season and low maintenance make it a popular choice for wildflower meadows and naturalised landscapes, adding a burst of colour and ecological value to its native and cultivated habitats by being a key player in supporting pollinators, improving soil health, conserving water and providing wildlife habitat so enhancing biodiversity in the garden too. This wonderful patch of poppies were right at home in the Mediterranean sunken garden @york_gate_garden #poppy #flowers #flowersofinstagram #garden #yorkgategarden #yorkgategardens #horticulturist #yorkshire

What a difference a week makes! The village well dressing was blessed last Saturday and we welcomed the sunshine and warmth for all the visitors it would bring for our opening weekend tea room pop up in the village hall. As a fundraiser for @artsderbyshire @s.h.e.uk and @rspca_official we needed to get as much cash taken as we could and then the dressing have been on display all week since then in the UK heatwave. …and this is the effect! The bright side of this is that the boards won’t need so much cleaning up for storing back in the loft if the hall until we need to use them again next year! Broken bits of dried out clay are on display in the village all weekend for anyone who wants to see them! It’s a piece of site specific contemporary art in many ways so we celebrate the broken version of this dressing as much as it in its full glory! #welldressing #derbyshiretraditions #traditionalcraft #welldressingderbyshire

Horti History episode 5 All through history we have been finding new ways to use, eat and cook plants even today we are still discovering inventive culinary ways to use our flowers. During the Second World War the push was perhaps greater than ever before as a result of the nations food shortages. Government bodies, food production companies and even WIs were given the task of come up with utilising what we can grow on our island with its temperamental weather. It wasn’t only tropical fruit, sugar and chocolate that were under the control of rationing, pepper too was in short supply so the game was on to find an alternative to this seasoning we take for granted today. With its reputation for the leaves having a peppery taste nasturtiums were the answer. Ground Nasturtium seeds to be precise, a plant that grows in abundance happily in our British climate, adding that bust of colour to the garden, and as an extra little bonus it’s one of those useful plants that attracts common garden pests away from your main crops. It was a win win! Anyway that’s enough Horti History for one day tune in next time to see what else you might discover about a plant in your garden. 🌳 These nasturtiums you might remember were sown in one of my sow along Saturday reels. Tip Top Pink Blush from @mrfothergills a gorgeous variety! #mrfothergills #history #hotriculture #flowersofinstagram #flowers #ww2 #gardening #edible #horticulturist #growyourown

Here is a super simple and very delicious tray bake to help you use up a glut of rhubarb. This one is a favourite even with ardent rhubarb haters. The sponge mix is 150 g of melted butter, 150 g of self raising flour, 150 g of sugar and two eggs. Mix them all together and then chop 300 g of rhubarb into small pieces and combine in the sponge mix. Bake at 180°C for 45 minutes until a skewer comes out cleanly and then slice into fingers and dust with icing sugar to serve. This never lasts very long, so get used to putting this recipe on repeat once you’ve tried it for the first time 😋 #RecipeOfTheDay #BakeAlong #allotmentsofinstagram #GlutCrop

A huge thank you to GMG members John & Leonie Mason for sharing with us some photos from their recent visit to @breezykneesgardens in Kent. A tourism award winner, the 20 acre garden features 7,000 different plant varieties. John said: "Many have plants labelled, making it a dream for taxonomy freaks like me. We took over 300 photos - here are some of them." Sounds like a great day to us! Which is your favourite garden to visit? #gardenvisit #memberphotos #gardening

🧑‍🌾it’s Top Tip Thursday🧑‍🌾 This week my top top is for anyone that isn’t too sure wether you should cut your lawn in this hot weather we’ve been having. Well yes you can is the answer. All you need to do is raise the bed of your lawnmower so it’s not cutting as low as you have been in Spring this helps to give your lawn the protection it needs from the hot summer sun as taller grass shades the soil, reducing water evaporation and preventing weed growth. It also promotes deeper root growth, making your lawn more drought-resistant. All essential for keeping your lawn as lushous as possible in this glorious hot sun. So that’s my top tip for this week tune in next week for more top tips. Shoutout to the @dennismowers we used at Horticultural College fabulous British lawn mowers that sound like a Rolls Royce being pushed down the lawn! #lawncare #rhslevel2 #horticulture #gardening #horticulturestudent #gardensofinstagram #lawnmowing @dennismowers
