Orchids have the most amazing adaptations to lure pollinators. Bulbophyllum barbigerum is an epiphytic orchid from Central to West Africa which has the most extraordinary lip which moves in the slightest breeze acting as a lever to push pollinators up against the important parts of the flowers. Hessea cinnamomea is an endangered member of the Amaryllis family and a close relative to Nerine’s, this species only grow on sandy flats around Cape town where development increasingly destroy their habitat. Protea cordata or known as the heart-leaf Protea makes clusters of mushroom like flowers that seem to push straight out of the ground. The blushing bride (Serruria florida) is one of many favourites at the South African stand at the RHS Chelsea flower show. Endemic to the Franschhoek valley this endangered wild flower has been cloned and planted for cut flower production in the Cape. Congratulations to our South African gardening friends 💐 For the first time in four years, South Africa was represented at @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show. The Cape Flora of South Africa exhibit, wowed guests and judges alike, winning a Gold medal with outstanding scores, “Best Exhibit in the Great Pavilion” and “The Best New Design.” Head garden designer Leon Kluge (@leonkluge ) shared his thoughts on their success and the inspiration behind the design. Leon and artist Tristan Woudberg (@tristanwoudberg ) led a group of volunteers to create this year’s display, inspired by the windswept slopes of the Cape Mountains. Large clay sculptures formed the backdrop for the display of fynbos cut flowers of which a multitude of species were presented. Using an astonishing 22 000 stems, the display celebrates the beauty and significance of one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.
