Here are some tricks and my thoughts around workouts that really changed my perspective mentally around running. Once I took the pressure off I started to see huge results that I knew were there and I showed up to races feeling excitedly and ready versus feeling dead and full of crippling performance anxiety. What a day! Guys I don’t even have words, I ran a 7.5 minute PR, I ran 2:30 in the marathon!!! Seriously?! I never dreamed when I started running again I’d ever get here. But I don’t have any words about that yet. So the words I will use is to express so much love for so many friends out here today who crushed it. The @runinrabbit #rabbitpro ‘s crushed it @m.lee23 and I shared like 10 miles together joking about her picking up her water bottles before she blew by me at the end. I hear so many cheers for go rabbit, I shared some miles with the woman leaders include Steph Bruce and got some USATF coverage haha! My friend @annmariekirkpatty and @greenbodymary who we all had dinner together last night both had 7 minute PR’s too, maybe there is something to that! I saw so many #swapteam People on the course and we talked about sharing just the best coach in the world @addiedoesstuff ! Today was a day I’ll remember for a long time. And not least of all my amazing sister @klastava_fye who cane all the way out to Sacramento for me for this race and was the best crew!!! Just the best sister ever. Oh and I got some TV coverage check me out on channel 3!!

Normalize the Hell out of having periods where motivation wanes and you don’t force your way to train. Training isn’t about being perfect. Even at my highest fitness levels I had plently of unscheduled rest days that had nothing to do with injuries. I had weeks in the middle of my 2:30 marathon block where I dropped 50% of weekly mileage in a week because my life demanded it. Consistency isn’t just forcing yourself through everything. For me the reason I ran my PR was because when my motivation was low I listened and took a day off or spent time with friends and my motivation returned quicker while my fitness didn’t disappear. My entire career has been a never ending battle of motivation vs real life wants. And the times I’ve gone too far down the never miss a day mentality the more I burned out and eventually took time off. And the more balanced I have been the better my training has gone. Don’t mistake someone’s dependency on exercise as a reason your motivation isn’t good enough. The best athletes can disassociate themselves between being runners and being human beings living amazing lives. Based on a true story that’s happened so many times and maybe also this morning 😂 😂 Some mornings I grab my coffee and my breakfast and I’m out the door ready to roll and other mornings my body has other thoughts and I’m prolonging my run or even heading back home a couple miles in. Over the years I’ve gotten much better at finding what works for me the night before and morning of but occasionally I’ll still run into this issue and just laugh as my long run start is delayed significantly. But also I think this is something all runners definitely deal with at some point or several long runs in their careers. Yeah there is no award for who completed their long runs and races with the least amount of fuel. So often runners talk about the end of their long runs and how they died and always attribute it to their fitness when you dig deeper you find out they are criminally low on their fuel intake for the amount of time you are running. That usually is a tell tale sign that late in the run the negative deficit game they are playing has caught up with them and that increasing the fuel would significantly give more energy to you when you need it most. In top of that taking no water is just asking for trouble from a dehydration and also fueling perspective as some gels require water. When in training the long run is as much about gaining endurance as it is about fine tuning and improving your fueling intake. In fact I’d argue as you get more experienced the biggest part of your long run is the fueling you take in to help you be successful and to ward off injuries. Don’t try and sneak by with the least amount of fuel possible as if it’s some badge, instead wear the badge of “I took the most fuel I could”. And if you struggle taking gels take advice from the countless RD’s who can recommend different gels and sources of sugar to support you. And the reality is sometimes you can’t, but I’m always gonna be here speaking that truth into existence. It often seems that all you see is cultivated posts of busy runners or parents who never miss a run never miss a beat and are just always “committed”. It’s not spoken enough how committed can actually be dependence very easily and bc it’s the wellness world doing more is always looked at as better. Well when runners find this page all they find is an athlete and coach who will always make sure to talk about how balance doesn’t always mean never missing a run. That balance means finding ways to do the best you can with the hand you are dealt. It means enjoying vacations sometimes and missing some runs. Going out with friends the night before a run and it being harder the next day AND not apologizing for having that fun. At the end of the day you can still chase your goals and be committed and have balance in your life. It’s probably the one decision I made that has impacted my life the longest. Everything from my wife, friends, jobs, to athletic accomplishments all stem from the decision to walk onto the track team back in 1997. My life would be entirely different if I didn’t find my way to track. As a kid there was a lot of time I didn’t feel like I found my place in the world. I jumped between friendship groups, I was too sensitive as a male for a lot of friendships and I really struggled with focus as someone diagnosed at a young age with ADHD. And so a random decision on a dare to join track for decades now has given me so many things I’ve always wanted back then. Friendship, a community, a place to focus and chase goals. I thought I’d always be a basketball player, and I can’t believe this one decision has lead me to life this incredible life.
