In queer culture specifically, we find our chosen family and have each other’s backs, which is something I think anyone can learn from.” Meet Sofía Camacho Ferral👋, the top non-binary finisher at the 2024 #RBCBrooklynHalf , a member of the @brooklyntrackclub , and a coach for the @milehighrunclub during the day and a drag performer at night. On our blog, Sofía shares their story about transitioning from being a college athlete at @columbia to life after college, racing in the non-binary category, and speaks to their traumatic experience with their high school track and field coach and how they serve as a resource to other young runners so they know they’re not alone. “Now running has become very popular and people get to know each other, travel to races together. Races are not just a competition and measuring speed, but a big gathering.” 🤝 Meet NYRR member Goran Vendlener👋 who moved to the U.S. from Serbia in 2018. They’ve been a member for six years and race as a non-binary runner. They said running makes them feel younger, more attractive, and more optimistic. “After running I am more ambitious, during running I make plans in my head!” Goran appreciates the perks that come with an NYRR membership like attending special member-only events, race-fee discounts, and being able to participate in the 9+1 program for guaranteed entry to the TCS New York City Marathon. “I can say I’m addicted to running. My calendar is full.” Their favorite race is the NYRR Retro 4-Miler, and Goran said they also love running the NYRR Staten Island Half. This year will be their 100th half marathon ever! This fall they are setting their sights on running their 53rd marathon at the TCS New York City Marathon which, coincidentally, will also be the 53rd running of the race. “I run because I have the ability to make myself feel like a champion and a runner, and that's a luxury.” 🏆👟 Goran is also a pacer for the NYRR Pace Team. They’ve paced runners at the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile, the NYRR Fred Lebow Half Marathon, and the TCS New York City Marathon Training Series 12M. “Running is a lifestyle. At the 2024 #MastercardMini10K , we chatted with 26-time finisher Ulrike Klopfer about the progression of this race from when it first began in 1972 to what it is now in 2024. As we commemorate the anniversary of Title IX, let’s celebrate how far we’ve come while acknowledging that we’re not done yet.💙💪
