Another fun … always challenging … Pre-Birthday 13.1 race done ✅ It’s a pain to get up at 4:30a & get to this race, I get lost in the park every year 😂 🙈 it’s usually warmer & humid (I prefer it cold!) but running this @brooklynhalfmarathon race just 3 days before my bday has special significance. It helps remind me that, as I grow another year older, I’m still strong, I’m still in the race and super blessed to be able to face the challenge. •NEVER STOP CHALLENGING YOURSELF •TRAIN HARD, LOVE HARDER •NEVER STOP HAVING FUN OR LOSE YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR •BE KIND & FORGIVING TO YOURSELF & OTHERS •BE GRATEFUL TO BE IN THE RACE •NEVER EVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT CHEERS TO 53 YEARS —well, almost! It’s here! Swipe ➡️🎉 Community Sunday Run Day + Post-Run Yoga Team Teach w/special guest & my friend @jennyrayyoga Jenny teaches @yogasparkstudio & is very acclimated to exercising in the 🔥 …. But how long does it take the rest of us to get acclimated to running in the heat? To get fully acclimated, it takes about 2 weeks depending on your current state of acclimation. Some adaptations, such as increase in blood plasma volume, can happen after just two longer runs, others like a decrease in core temperature, happen right away. The good news is that the heat acclimation process INCREASES YOUR EXERCISE CAPACITY… which means it allows you to run faster under normal conditions, MAKING THE EXTRA SWEAT ALL WORTH IT FOR YOUR FALL RACES! It might feel uncomfortable at first & you’ll need to take certain steps to insure that you’re ready for your first outdoor runs in the heat: Consider using an electrolyte supplement like @liquidiv (530mg sodium) or @drinklmnt (1 full gram) Mix in about 1 liter of water & don’t wait to hydrate. Drink before, during & after exercise to thirst, you’re good to go 👍 Besides electrolytes, you also need energy to power exercise. This energy comes from burning glucose & fatty acids. Longer, harder efforts require more glucose, which can come from diet or internal stores. Your muscles & liver store around 500 grams of glucose as glycogen, but harder workouts & longer runs can deplete these stores, leading to fatigue or lack-luster performance AKA dragging ass, bonking, hitting the wall-call it what you want-it sux💀 Athletes often use supplemental glucose to offset this decline. LACE UP, it’s finally happening! RUN WITH RHONDA: Sunday Fun-Run Day! It’s been a huge goal of mine to lead an inclusive run club to build confidence as a runner, create a community filled with fun, camaraderie, where we cheer each other on and hold each other accountable for consistency. I want everyone to experience the unmatchable feeling of pride and accomplishment that only comes after a group run or race. Here, I’ll be able to pass on what I have learned over the years as a runner. Besides being a Barry’s Instructor, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, I am a V.DOT certified run coach. I coach runners how to start their running journey, become a stronger runner or smash a PR! I’m here to teach you how to avoid injuries, properly fuel your body so it will perform at it’s highest potential and you’ll learn the proper stretches and recoveries post-run and/or race. To help keep you inspired, I’m also organizing special events with guests, even giving you the opportunity to run a local 5K (or 1/2 marathon) race together (or two!) right here in Westchester. Global Running Day - a worldwide celebration of the power of running. “It you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” Dr. Martin Luther King Running is a love/hate relationship. Running is hard. At first it feels like you’re dying, but when you finish, you feel reborn and able to take on anything! Don’t Not Run because it’s hard. Running isn’t just hard for you, it’s hard for EVERYONE!! A FAMOUS RUNNING QUOTE: Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional. Accept the fact that it will be challenging… BUT also know that the feeling you get from overcoming the fear of doing something hard will empower you to do other hard & scary things. Have courage. It will mentally get easier over time. Embrace the ups and downs. Just do your best today and KEEP GOING. ENJOY THE JOURNEY. It’s totally worth it. It doesn’t matter if you run fast or slow, run long or run once around the block, YOU ARE A RUNNER!!

Motivation Monday: THIS IS 54!* (Small disclaimer-Shirley is only 50!) Our fitness needs evolve as much as our bodies do, especially a woman’s body. A woman’s body is able to make tiny little humans, sustain that life for as long as our current conditions permit and then return to its former state (well, mostly! stupid skin!!) and do it multiple times! Our bodies take another big shift in our 40’s, the muscle mass we lost over the last decade is adding up now & our metabolism begins to slow. Then, in our mid-late 40’s, as our hormone levels drop, we lose muscle mass at an even quicker pace as our estrogen AND TESTOSTERONE levels plummet, recovery becomes harder, sleep is disrupted, brain fog sets in, energy levels dip, moods swing like a teenager at the height of puberty, then the middle begins to expand. Peri and Post Menopause …. it’s literally like your body has been invaded by an alien. WHO IS THIS PERSON? It can happen slowly or it can hit like a brick house, but one thing is for certain: NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO GIVE UP! You’ve probably heard them: “You’re just getting older, Sweetie, maybe you should slow down, take it easy.” Well, I’m here to say HELL-TO-THE-NO! NOW IS THE TIME TO FIGHT LIKE HELL FOR LONGEVITY! Fight back to maintain your fitness and do the things you love to do longer! LIFT HEAVY for muscle mass, balance and grip strength RUN LONG DISTANCES to build mitochondria and burn fat SPRINT hit your HIITS & plyometrics UP YOUR PROTEIN EAT a huge variety of complex carbs, multi-colored fruits & vegetables SLEEP more, stress less Practice self-care & SELF-LOVE AND FOR EFF’S SAKE.. you’ve busted ass for a long time raising a family, juggling your career, HAVE SOME FUN! IT’S TIME TO PRIORITIZE YOUR HEALTH, TIME TO TAKE CENTER STAGE IN YOUR OWN LIFE…IT’S FINALLY YOUR TIME … TIME TO RECLAIM YOUR SELF!
