Musical Instrument Museum

One of my favorite exhibits at the Musical Instrument Museum. All of these instruments were made from recycled materials. How it started -> how it’s going 🎶 when I was 12 I saved up money from busking around Palo Alto, doing odd jobs, playing at pizza parlors and farmers markets with my dad and brothers, asking for Christmas money from grandparents, etc… all to go towards buying my first @martinguitar !! When I finally had saved up enough money I went into @gryphonstrings with $2000 in cash, they counted it and handed me my guitar that I played for years before selling it to a relative so that I could afford a vintage Martin 😅 luckily the guitar stayed in the family and now it’s on display at @mimphx museum where I got to see it this week during our three night stint at the theater! I remember obsessing over the guitar and even memorizing its serial number 997250… it was fun to take a trip down memory lane and an honor to see it on display among instruments played by Elizabeth Cotton, John Hartford, @daviddawggrisman and more!

Last week I visited the MIM to see their new exhibit “Acoustic America: Instruments played by the heroes of folk, blues, and bluegrass music ” which features two of my instruments: Big Head Joe the giant six string banjo and my handmade Sankofa Gourd banjo made by Bob Thornburg! It is the largest museum of its type in the world, housing more than 15,000 musical instruments and associated objects from nearly 200 countries and territories.
