Allow me to introduce you to Teddy Martinez; a gentle giant loaded with talent. He had a huge singing voice, commanded his bass guitar, and was one of the best audio engineers I've ever worked with. Teddy's magnificent ear for music and audio were only outshined by his quick wit and immense love for this family and friends. The very first time my name was featured on a marquee, it was misspelled. Teddy was so tickled seeing "Perry Cardona" on full display. He called me Perry ever since. Another time, I was smitten by our waitress during a dinner with Teddy's band and other colleagues. I struck up the nerve to ask her number, but Teddy, who sat across from me, took the opportunity to embarrass me. "You're not going to get her number," said Teddy. "Look! She's hesitating. You're crashing and burning just like Malaysia Airlines." Teddy proceeded to make a crashing sound while diving his hand onto the table. Our entire party began laughing in hysterics. Teddy was running sound for a show I was playing keyboards on. There wasn't much of a crowd. When we'd finish a song, he'd make a cricket sound with his mouth that reverberated throughout the venue. Teddy never passed up an opportunity to make people laugh. Through it all, he did incredible work. He could hear if a speaker was out of phase with his ear alone. He mixed so many projects I was part of. If Teddy was running front of house, the show was guaranteed to sound immaculate. The last few conversations I had with him were about his daughter. Teddy gushed over the multiple scholarship offers she had for her stellar pitching as a softball player. I don't recall him ever being in a bad mood. Teddy was full of life. I can't make sense of why he was called up to heaven so soon. Teddy had so much more goodness to share. His physical body may be gone, but he'll continue to live within all the lives he's touched. Every tear I shed for him is a reminder of how lucky I am for knowing him, for working him, for being embarrassed by him, and for loving him. Because of Teddy, I'm one of the luckiest people on the planet. RIP buddy! -Perry

Hi there! I had a great 10 day break. I had planned to work on some solo recordings and promo material, but I didn't. Instead, I visited some friends and family, disconnected from social media, and was just plain lazy many times in between. Something told me not to work, and I'm glad I didn't. My brain was fried and needed a rest. Now, I feel recharged and ready to go! Being an entertainer is such an odd ordeal. It's impossible to do this job at half speed. Going full tilt is the best way to bring smiles to others. This life isn't for everyone. Even though I'm built for this, I'm still human. I can't remember the last time I didn't work for an entire week, much less 10 days. This reminds me of the phrase "sharpen the saw," popularized by Stephen Covey. The principal is a lot to unpack, but here it is in a nutshell: Imagine there are two men, each sawing down a thick tree of equal size. Halfway through, the saws become dull. The first guy continues to grind away to not lose time. The second guy stops and sharpens his saw before continuing. Despite the second person taking a break, because of his sharpened saw, both men finish at the same time. The first guy is drenched in sweat, sore, and gassed. The second guy is ready for the next challenge. This is a philosophy I need to keep reminding myself about. I think it's a good one, and I thought I'd share. Now that my saw is sharpened, I'm ready to shred my accordion so hard it melts people's faces off. When I was a kid listening to country music with my parents, I never once thought I'd someday share the stage with @willienelsonofficial . @MickeyRaphael and I fiddled with some accordions backstage earlier in the day when I learned that The Mavericks were asked to share the stage with the country icon. Mickey said he'd have a mic for me downstage. The experience was pretty surreal. We stepped onto the stage as Willie was in mid-performance. He gave me a nod for the instrument break and I ripped an accordion solo. Seeing him smile in approvement was so gratifying. At the second instrument break, he points in my direction again. I was actually stunned as I was prepared to hear a sax or trumpet solo. However, when Willie tells you to take a solo, you take a solo. As fast as it came, the two songs were completed as we walked off stage. I didn't share words with Willie or any of his members after the performance, but I did receive some kind words from his crew. All in all, it felt like a vivid dream. I only wish my dad was around so I could tell him about it. Then again, he probably had the best seat in the house looking from above. My career has been full of wonderful moments, and this is certainly another highlight that was added to the list. I had a wonderful time at the Recording Academy's Block Party for the Nashville Chapter. Whether it's seeing old friends or meeting new people, it's always fun to rub elbows with creatives in the music industry. Austin, you were amazing! Thanks for helping us launch the MOON & STARS tour. It began Thursday as The Mavericks did an acoustic set live on @KUTX . The new album dropped on midnight. A flood of positive responses started pouring in. We proceeded to perform the next two nights to ruckus crowds at the @acllive moody theater. Ruben Ramos & Patricia Vonne were among the colleagues I got to see again. Nicole Atkins opened both Friday and Saturday nights. She was fantastic. All in all, it was a great experience. And to think, this tour is just getting started, I can barely contain my excitement for what's to come. Hope you can make it to a show at a city near you. It's release day! The Mavericks' 13th studio album, Moon & Stars, is available now! A big thanks to the "Core 4" for inviting me to record the accordion for this effort. To be a part of The Mavericks' discography is such an honor. I look forward to playing these new songs for the upcoming Moon & Stars tour. Special thanks to Gilbert Reyes, Jr. and the entire Hohner Accordions staff. Their support has helped me put my best foot forward in my contributions to studio recording and live performances.
