As part of an ongoing project with @faberbooks , Beak Brewery is using its labels to exhibit the work of some of the UK’s most urgent writers. The latest beer in the series – a DDH Pale Ale – is guest edited by the poet, editor and critic Camille Ralphs and features an extract from her collection of poems After You Were, I Am.
In this extraordinary debut, charged moments from history collide with our own godless modern world. The book’s three sections – ingenious rewritings of canonical prayers, dramatic monologues from the Pendle witch trials of 1612, and the divine tragedy of the Elizabethan magus John Dee – obsess over individual human characters and how our past informs (and informs on) our present.
Ralphs’s style is utterly distinctive; she is a modern metaphysical poet, tapping into a haunting, era-spanning utterance enlivened by the electric pulse of wordplay and imaginative conceit. This is poetry that in comprehending the past manages to make of it something utterly original and contemporary.

THESE HILLS WILL RISE AGAIN…
To all @thesehillsfest ticket-holders, brewers, bar staff, volunteers, food vendors, sponsors and musicians: thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support, patience and overwhelming positivity. Cancelling the event was the hardest decision we’ve ever had to make. Each year is the culmination of 12 months of planning for our small team here at Beak, costing us in the region of £100k for an event that just about breaks even. It’s a true labour of love. More still, producers and customers had travelled from as far away as New York and Australia to be with us. Sadly, it was just far too dangerous to go ahead; on Saturday morning, incredibly strong gusts of wind (far greater than forecasted) knocked down our main marquee and severely damaged the tents housing our food vendors just before the event was due to open. People could have been seriously hurt. All ticket-holders will be refunded soon but, in the meantime, we wanted to let you know that we’ll be forever grateful to those who forged ahead with the good times anyway, especially our amazing bar team who put in a Herculean effort down at the taproom. A big thank you also to the hundreds of people who have been in touch with messages of support – it’s a true testament to the awesomeness of the craft beer community. Love, Beak x

THESE HILLS - ALL SESSIONS CANCELLED
The gale force winds at our site have now completely flattened the main marquee (severely damaging the bars below) and almost taken down the second marquee. Unfortunately, the forecast is now showing similar strength winds for both tonight and tomorrow. So it is with the heaviest of hearts that we are having to cancel the whole festival. We’re obviously devastated as it’s the culmination of 12 months work but safety has to be our number one priority. We are so sorry. All ticket-holders will be refunded.
BEAK X UCHU COSM IPA
Last month, we were delighted to host Masahiro Kusunose here at Beak. As co-founder of @uchubrewing.japan , Masa is creating some of the best hop-forward beer in the world right now, along with some outlandishly catchy pop music. The result of our collaboration is COSM, a super hazy India Pale Ale brewed with copious amounts of Strata CGX, Idaho 7, Nelson and Citra, with additions during whirlpool, hop dip and mid-fermentation.
