My workshop only releases 2-3 guitars a year. This means that I spend a lot of time on every single one, one at a time, finessing the timbre (and timber) of the instrument. It’s been such a pleasure working on this 5000 year old Oak wood, which fell to a Neolithic storm a few kilometres from where I was born (a fair few years later, admittedly) in East Anglia.
There are so many processes involved in crafting a guitar. So much physics, so many things to complicate the harmony. The slip of a careless hand can ruin the smallest detail, leading to big consequences. The concentration has to be at 101% from the moment I touch anything.
The best consequence of this is the way I have learned to react to objects around me. I find myself appreciating the craft of little things much more than I used to. Always with curiosity, from park benches to the architecture I see around my home city of London. It makes for a much more interesting way of living.
