It has been such an honour to have the chance to work with such beautiful materials. Gold leaf is such a fragile yet powerful medium; it requires a steady hand, patience and close attention to detail and I always find my mind clears itself of all thoughts and worries when handling it.
For the last few weeks I’ve had these pieces on rotation in my room, and I’ve noticed how the changes in light over the course of the day transforms the picture entirely. At certain times the light hits the gold and just makes the whole image glow with a radiance that seems almost otherworldly.

When I was a teenager I played the piano relentlessly and there was actually a time when I wanted to be a concert/jazz pianist. It was one of my music teachers at school who channeled me into being a singer instead and I ended up at university studying classical vocal technique and eventually becoming a songwriter. While I’m grated for the knowledge, I never really felt an affinity for classical singing. I would often argue with my teachers because I wanted to change the melodies or improvise around what was on the score.
My room at uni was too small to fit a keyboard in so I bought a guitar and taught myself how to play some folk songs. People often say to me that I have an unusual way of playing the guitar, and my chord choices are really unconventional. I usually tell them it’s “probably because I have no idea what I’m doing”. Which is kind of true. I learned the piano carefully, with so much attention to convention and theory, and I find it weirdly liberating to have an instrument which I only know how to play by ear..
That said, the piano will always be my soul instrument, and I am so grateful to be living in a house which has a piano again 💫🌙💞

Which is your favourite ~ 1, 2 or 3?
‘Mountain Variations’ is a collection I’ve been working on recently, printing one of my drawings using a carbon neutral giclée printing method onto 100% cotton rag paper made at St Cuthbert’s Papermill in Somerset, and then finishing with hand painted 24 karat gold leaf. Each piece is unique with a different gold leaf design.
Since I’ve started using gold leaf I’ve been investigating sustainable gold leaf sourcing, as it’s important to me that my artworks are created using sustainable, planet and people friendly sources where possible.
I want to develop this collection and would love to know your favourite design xx
What an amazing few weeks it’s been 💫 I feel like I’m still riding on the high after releasing Sounds Like Easter.. The feedback so far has been really overwhelming, thank you thank you thank you 100x again to everyone who’s supported my musical / spiritual / creative journey up until this point.
Being an artist of any kind requires a person to battle an onslaught of self doubts and self sabotage, which at times (for me at least, but I suspect I’m not alone here!) can just make a person feel creatively paralysed and want to run and hide. Hide their work and hide themselves.
I truly believe that art cannot be made in a vacuum, and every artist requires a community of supportive cheerleaders to help them along the rocky path. I am so lucky to have found many such people so far along my path, and I hope that I can be a cheerleader for others (maybe you!) along the beautiful, daunting, foggy, blissful, brilliant thing that is the creative journey. If you have anything you’re currently working on and would like to share or need a bit of encouragement with, I would LOVE to hear it/read it/see it 💕 love, as always xxx
