This passion altar piece was originally created for the Church St. Peter and Paul in Göttingen by Hans Raphon in 1499. During the ensuing Reformation the altar piece was transported to the Cistercian Abbey Walkenried, where it remained for about 100 years at which point the catholic convent fled to Prague from the approaching Swedish army in the 30 Years’ war in 1631. After several locations in and around Prague, the altar came into the collection of the National Gallery in 1946. (I couldn’t find the exact provenance but the year 1946 suggests that somehow the pre-WWII owner of the altar was not in a position to reclaim the work. Considering that it is a German Christian artwork and Germans were heavily prosecuted in Czechoslovakia after the war, regardless of their relationship to the Nazis it seems likely that the work came into the collection as a result of the war.) The original altar consisted of 41 panels, of which only 13 remain (although I am unsure, whether the verso of these panels are also painted). Nevertheless, the narrative structure remains, with the left-hand side retelling Jesus’ story from the Last Supper until the carrying of the Cross and the right-hand side starting with the descent from the cross and ending with the arrival of the Holy Spirit. The Portrait of Peter Perez Burdett and his wife Hannah Wansell by Joseph Wright of Derby depicts a newlywed couple. The artist shows that Hannah was much older than her husband and suggests that the two were not very close by visually separating them with a wooden fence. Peter Perez Burdett is holding a case that contains a map, as he was a cartographer and was working on a map of Derbyshire. Takové exkurze jsou užitečné hned dvakrát, protože v budoucnu mohou pomoci i při složení zkoušky k trvalému pobytu. The National Gallery in Prague is split up between several locations across the city. I had already visited the Trade Fair Palace and the Kinsky Palace and after the Palais Lobkowicz I knew I would spend the rest of the day on castle hill, where the Schwarzenberg and Sternberg Palaces are located. Both of these are used to display the collection of Old Masters of the National Gallery. In one of the back corners of the Schwarzenberg Palace I discovered an analytical reconstruction of Petr Brandl’s “The Head of an Old Man” (pictures 9 and 10), which depicts the different steps of how the painting was constructed in many different layers. Especially for modern audiences, who often have attempted to paint themselves at school or as a hobby, it is often overlooked how classical painting relies on many preparatory steps to ground the canvas, which gives the paint its rich colour.
