Proud of the Canada we are. Acknowledging of the Canada we were. Hopeful for the Canada we are becoming. Canada Day elicits many feelings, opinions and viewpoints. Let’s be honest and real, Canada has a complex history. On one hand, we are so proud to be Canadian. To live in a safe and welcoming place for all peoples. A nation full of potential that is charging forward into the future. While on the other, we are acutely aware that Canada has amends to make. We acknowledge that this is a challenging and even sorrowing day for Indigenous peoples. Is it possible to both acknowledge our flawed history and be proud at the same time? Yes, we can be proud of some aspects while also recognizing there is much work for us to do for reconciliation to move forward. Acknowledgement of our history and our failures as a nation does not diminish what we have done right. There is place for both of these truths. Together, they can be a reason to push to right the wrongs of our past. So on this Canada Day we’re proud because there is good here, and good that has been done. We’re also acknowledging that our best Canada is one that goes into the future on the right foot, making amends for our past transgressions and righting wrongs long overdue. At Centrepeace, we believe that the counselling relationship is key to making positive changes during the therapy process. We work to establish a #connected , #compassionate and #collaborative relationship with our clients. Centrepeace was founded by Pamela Bailey in February ‘21. Pamela (she/they - pictured) is a queer social worker with many years experience in the field. As a part-time private practitioner since ‘19, she found that folks from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community were naturally seeking her out. I’m a queer, polyamorous single mother and under the name Pink Banana Sparkles, over the past 4 years I’ve used #colour , #whimsy , and #affirmingart pieces to cultivate a #community that #helps and #encourages others to embrace their true selves, struggles and all. My hope for every piece that I create is to help someone deal with the stresses of everyday life, with feelings of ease, comfort and understanding. Whether it’s with a piece of #art that holds deep meaning, or simply something aesthetically pleasing, it all matters and it can all make a difference. I started Pink Banana Sparkles in 2020, after I lost my job working nights at a club. My daughter was only 2 at the time, and I started making ooak Christmas ornaments. It re-ignited my love and passion for creating. Before I knew it, I was successfully selling them through the Christmas season. After that, I began to paint larger scale body portraits as I went on my own #bodylovingjourney . Then came #whimsical food-themed genitals, and handsculpted magnets.
