We had a great time hosting the team on a glorious weather day back in May. Whilst Puffin numbers are struggling nationally, we are very proud that our numbers remain stable here on Skomer.
We would like to wish a Happy Pride Month to all our staff, volunteers, visitors and hostel guests - thank you for being you.
Equality and diversity are hugely important to us here on Skomer and we strive to make our island accessible for all.
Whilst we are continually trying to improve, we currently take these measures to help ensure our LGBTQ+ guests feel welcome:
- Pronoun pins available for all staff and volunteers
- Gender neutral bathroom facilities
- Calling out homophobic language - it simply isn't tolerated on the island or our social media
- Setting up LGBTQ+ events (these will be in place for 2025)

We still have a few places left on our Skomer Music retreat this summer with Filkin's Music.
We're really keen to bridge the connection between the arts and the natural world - the island is a powerful place and perfectly lends itself to a retreat of this kind. The event will include open sessions, teaching elements and guided walks of the island.
Contact the booking office Monday - Friday, 9am-4.30pm to secure your place - they're going fast!
Big storm and swell came in yesterday - thankfully most of our Kittiwakes clung on, we aren't seeing much evidence of nests being washed off.
The weather couldn't be more different today!
Our third and final webcam is now live!
This livestream will give you a unique perspective into the lifecycle of a Manx Shearwater from the comfort of your own home. Follow the journey of a Manxie chick as it hatches, grows and fledges the nest.

We had a busy day on the boat yesterday getting ready for our seabird counting season!
The day started with a gas bottle run to ensure our hostel remains nicely supplied with gas for the next few months, before we nipped back over to pick up a month's worth of food for the team - all packed in biosecure boxes and crates to keep unwanted stowaways out. We finished the day with a quick bit of gull counting from the boat.
A massive effort from the team - we're now set up nicely for the start of counts next week. First up, Guillemots and Razorbills.
Our Raven chicks on the Amos have fledged successfully today - keep your eyes peeled for them on the west coast. What a beautiful day they've chosen for it!
A little late to the party, but we couldn't resist sharing a few snaps of the aurora borealis as they lit up Skomer on Friday night. Northern Lights + Manxies calling - a pretty unforgettable evening! /2024/05/red-and-yellow-and-pink-and-green.html
It's been a busy few weeks on the island and set to get busier, with seabird counts starting at the end of the month! A slightly belated April update from long-term volunteers Huia and Mike: /2024/05/island-update-spring-is-here.html
