This week we head just across the street from the Battle Monument to take a closer look at the Sedgwick Monument.
The statue is a memorial to U.S. Military Academy Class of 1837 Graduate, Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick, who was the highest-ranking Union Army casualty of the Civil War. Known by his troops as "Uncle John," he was wounded numerous times throughout the war and was eventually killed in action at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in 1864 while personally directing artillery placements.

The monument is said to bring luck to cadets who are struggling academically if they visit the statue at midnight the night before a term-end exam, in full dress uniform, under arms and spin the rowels on the monument's spurs.
