Whilst on a walk in Derbyshire, we thought we had spotted a chicken of the woods mushroom in a privately owned field, so we went to ask the owner if it would be ok to take some photographs.
The lady, who lived next to the field, said we were more than welcome to take pictures and asked us if it were the fungi growing on the camel tree… (yes, it was)! 🐪🌳
When she saw how excited we were to see up close that it was definitely chicken of the woods, she told us we could pick it to eat! 😊 We were so thrilled and grateful. We didn’t take all of the fungi and we rubbed a small bit that dropped off, on the rest of the tree, to re-infect it. It was growing on an old elder.
The lady then sold us some of her chicken’s eggs, which were beautiful and fresh and from happy, healthy chickens! 🥚 She spoke to us for a while and even invited us for a cup of tea next week!
It turns out she is also called Fiona and is the same age as one half of
@alittleallotmenter , also with Scottish heritage! She used to be a farmer and now does pet sitting and tends to her garden. She has a rescue cat and has no tv - an absolute icon! We were so in awe of her and her life style choices.
Isn’t it great when you meet lovely people and they have similar interests to you!?
So grateful for our beautiful eggs and fresh mushrooms, which we will have for breakfast tomorrow! 🍳🍄🟫
