Europe is generating more plastic waste than ever — but the EU is working to stop this trend ♻️
Waste is often burned for energy and a lot of it gets exported outside Europe due to lack of capacity. However, more and more plastic is recycled, and new EU rules require countries to meet big reduction targets for plastic waste.
#OnThisDay three years ago, the EU banned the sale of single-use plastics such as plates and cutlery. Newer rules focus on reducing the high amounts of plastic packaging waste (e.g. bottles) and marine litter.

🇭🇺 The Hungarian presidency of the Council of the EU starts today! 🇪🇺
The Council is the EU institution representing member state governments. Every six months, the presidency of this institution rotates among them.
The presiding country sets the EU’s agenda, focusing on priorities and pressing issues such as the economy or the environment.
The Hungarian presidency runs from 1 July until the end of 2024.

🎉 🇪🇺 Today we celebrate the birthday of one of the founders of the European Union, Robert Schuman!
#Onthisday in 1886, the former President of the European Parliament was born in Luxembourg. He later became a French citizen and was a key participant in the resistance during WWII.
After the war, Schuman dedicated his life to politics with the goal of promoting peace and unity across Europe. His declaration on 9 May 1950 laid the foundations for the birth of the EU that shares these same principles.

Europe is facing an alarming surge in illicit drug trafficking and abuse, posing a critical threat to public safety and security within the EU and on a global level.
Last year, Parliament approved the creation of the European Drugs Agency, which will replace the current European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction on 2 July 2024. The organisation will have a new mandate and a stronger position to tackle problems relating to illicit drug trafficking and abuse.
The illicit drugs market is the largest criminal market in the EU, claiming an increasing number of lives since 2012 but their impact goes even beyond that.
Today is the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. If you or someone you know has a substance abuse issue, you might be interested to know that the EU has a drugs strategy and action plan aimed at reducing drug-related health and social harm, while ensuring that treatment offered to drug users helps them recover and reintegrate into society.

Today, we draw attention to the 117.3 million people who have been forcibly displaced from their homes. Europe stands in solidarity with all refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people, including the millions of Ukrainians who have fled war in their home country.
