How We Roll Wednesday #howwerollwednesday to celebrate dice games, which was created a year ago by @buryboardgames and this week the theme was the dice that started it all which wasthe apt choice chosen by @themidlandmeeple (Next week it is summer which was picked by @games_with_graven ). I find it hard to believe that this hashtag started a year ago. I think I have managed to join in every week and although some games may have featured in more than one theme that is still a lot of games chosen to represent this weekly celebration. The very first theme for this hashtag was Custom Dice which was picked by @board.game.family.uk I have elected to feature the first game that I used for the very first week as I believe it deserves more attention. The game is Era: Medieval Age is ideal. I really do like polyomino games and my wife compiled a top 10 list of her favourite polyomino games last November. What I enjoy about this game is that it is a roll & build so you get the tactile element of placing the polyomino buildings. For a change we had time to play a favourite game of ours - Planet Unknown. We just played the basic planet and corporation. This time is was just the two of us, but it plays well no matter the player count. My wife records the scores and it was interesting to note the average scores, the top scores for each of us and our win rates. Normally I am not too bothered but increasing the number of red event cards definitely dropped our scores compared to our averages. This week's #mysterymonday🎲 (created by @justthreemeeple ) is fireworks 🎇 as chosen by @saraalwaysloses I was thinking my only option would be the obvious one that springs to mind, but whilst looking round our collection my eyes fell on this game. Probably it is a bit obscure for most to recognise as it was never an especially popular game. Last week's game was from the expansion to Carcassonne the Castle which is a two player variant of Carcassonne and has a scoring track bounding the play area. The expansion to the game is called the Falcon. The game itself has been out of print for a while and is usually quite expensive as a result. Age 10+ ▶️ 60 mins playing time 1-5 players #bgg Complexity rating - 2.17 Worker placement, set collection and hand management It plays similarly to the usual game with a few tweaks to the setup of the shop deck and the fancy dragon deck. These can be modified once you have unlocked some achievements if you score over 75 reputation points and have met specific requirements. You visit a shop and you then have two options which are either gather resources and use the ability of dragons at the shop as well as of the shop. Alternatively you can cast one of the revealed spells for points and rewards. The main difference to solo play is at the end of your turn you will reveal one of the standard dragons and place it in an empty shop slot. This may expand the town with a new shop as normal, but will also move the different dragon player tokens to that shop meaning you will need to pay a resource for each dragon present in a shop that you visit. When you reveal the standard dragon, this may cause an enchantment to be played. The end of the game is triggered if the standard dragon deck is depleted or if the last enchantment is drawn. I was a lowly shopkeeper as I finished on 66 points and didn't manage the 75 points needed to become a Flamekeeper, but for a first try, I was pleased enough with my efforts. A game that doesn't always get to the table very often is Sheriff of Nottingham, but when it does, it always goes down well. This is usually at the request of one particular family member. For a change, no one was particularly striking deals with one another and so it was definitely harder to smuggle goods through. This was probably the first game that we used a scoring app for to make it easier to determine the winner. Another week, and it's time for another #firstimpressionsfriday🎲 , as created by @kay_plays_games and this week we tried Awkward Guests. Certain types of games are guaranteed to involve the whole family and one such type is deduction games. Despite this game being published in 2016, I hadn't heard of it until a couple of months ago. This was described to me as like Cluedo but without the hassle of the dice rolls dictating your movement so you are focused on solving the murder. Use of different combinations of cards means that there is a staggering 3600 different cases solutions so more replayability than you could ever imagine. In the game you will be asking the other players if they have information about two specific points of interest. Then by deciding between those who offer to swap cards with you (based on the value of information contained on each card) then you can swap with different numbers of players and so often everyone will have clues to try to narrow down the mystery of the murder. You will be trying to find out who committed the murder, how they carried it out, what their motive was and whether or not there was an accomplice. Each player has their own sheet to record all this information and there is a lot to sift through. Cleverly enough you can use an app to check if your deductions were correct and if you haven't got all of your facts correct, you don't discover the correct solution and you can still continue to play albeit that you are not allowed to make a guess next round. So even if you guessed one point of the solutions having narrowed it down to two possibilities for that spect then you can't just win on your next turn and maybe someone else who thoroughly checked their facts can then win. A year or so ago , @ourboardgamestory ran a giveaway in conjunction with @insideupgames (who are responsible for bringing us Earth) to win a full pledge of Terminus complete with the Kickstarter gifts such as 50 metal coins, the metal terminus markers and 5 metal trains as well as the deluxe resources. It arrived today and the extras look and feel amazing not least the coins but also the mini traffic cones. I was really pleased when I learnt we had won the giveaway as we do enjoy network building games and my wife enjoys marketplace economy. I saw that at the recent UKGE that this was one of the anticipated games and if Vital Lacerda describes it as "A heavy, tight game with a lot of options and filled with difficult decisions." then you know you are in for a treat. The game is about managing money, resources and time to build a network of subway routes and this fulfill contracts to earn prestige. Suffice to say I am glad to see that Paul Grogan of Gaming Rules has recently done a How to Play video. Having played a few games of Harmonies, we were keen to play the reverse side of the player board. The differences from the side we have been playing are that there are slightly more spaces and instead of points for a continuous river, points are awarded for separate areas bounded by the river. This was a good variation on the original rules, and it did not take any real effort to cope with the rule changes. We played a couple of games on this side to test out our strategies. We played two games at two players and one at three players. The two player games were fairly well matched with only a couple of points in it, whilst the three player game saw a bit of a spread in scores but the winner wasn't always the same person and it did seem to depend on who managed to get a specific card or two which fitted in most with certain configurations of habitats that were created. It's obvious why this was one of the games being recommended by the Spiel des Jahres and the ease both in which the game can be set up as well as to be played is the main allure for the game. Of course this is why it is so popular now and is sought after. This type of game appeals to us as a family and I am happy we got to try this. How We Roll Wednesday #howwerollwednesday to celebrate dice games, which was created by @buryboardgames and this week the theme was animal dice which was chosen by @nane_spielt_in_ffm and also @pink_meeple (Next week it is dice that started it all which was picked by @themidlandmeeple ). When the name of the game - Pechvogel translates into unlucky bird (person) and the tagline is - anything that can go wrong, will go wrong!, Then it's a pretty safe bet that the kids will have fun playing it, especially when you are encouraged to frustrate one another. If you enjoy or take delight in a bit of take that, then this game certainly does. You roll the seven dice numbered 3 to 7 with the extra face being a raven. You pick one number which is then your target number and you try to get four dice with this number. Any ravens are also kept aside. If you roll four of your target number then you can pick one of three score markers for that number & points (the game ends when these run out) and you can steal one of these off an opponent if you wish whilst discarding one other from the middle. However rolling three ravens means you collect a frustration stone from the supply (or possibly more from the board if they were played by your opponents that round) which is worth minus three points per stone at the end. Also if you roll more than four of your desired number or more than three ravens then you take the raven marker known as Murphy and the frustration stones are now minus seven points each. This week's #mysterymonday🎲 (created by @justthreemeeple ) is expansion as chosen by @rolldraworplay Certain we have a number of expansions to choose from and it was difficult narrowing it down. In the end, I chose this one even though we have yet to play with it. I love the artwork but especially the Easter eggs in the game. Who would have thought to find Shrek in this game. Last week's game was from Broom Service (the card game) which was by the same designers as Isle of Skye - Andreas Pelikan and Alexander Pfister with artwork by Vincent Dutrait. When friends came round recently they brought one of the games that they had backed on Kickstarter a while ago and that we played the last time they visited. It's a game that they had given to their eldest and which has a bit of take that in it.
