We started playing CloudAge by @nanox.games not expecting much because of the not so exciting BGG rating but ended up being totally hooked by it!
This is not going to be a detailed review, just a list of random thoughts about the game.
• CloudAge features a lot of different mechanisms that blend together smoothly and not a single one of them dominates the game. It’s the details that make all the difference in how smartly the game is designed and how important each move is.
• Gathering resources has never been more exciting! Yeah the production step is rather flat but the map and the sleeved cards are great. Choosing which city to land on is never an easy choice considering resources, potential new growth placement and missions. The sleeved cards are a genius little trick that got us all closer, trying to solve the little puzzle that was presented to us each time.
• Multiple paths to victory is something we enjoy tremendously and CloudAge offers it in abundance. There is no best strategy for the game. Some choices will depend on the initial setup but in reality there is so much freedom over the path a player wishes to take long term. All different strategies have the potential to win and we never felt cornered.
• The campaign didn’t offer enough for us to consider it necessary. If anything, we think the game would be better if it was simply presented in its full form from the beginning. Some extra scenario cards with different book actions would have been enough to offer even more replay value.
• Similarly, while the rulebook felt easy to read and we understood the flow of the game fast, the complications with the different setup, the scenarios and campaign choices left us feeling lost at the beginning. Again, this could have been easily avoided if it wasn’t for the campaign.
Overall, we felt that CloudAge is an underrated game that we enjoyed tremendously in its final form and it’s a shame that we had to go through all the trouble of the campaign to get there!
